Abstract

The scope of this paper is to justify my artifacts in Domain D: Planning Instruction and

Designing Learning Experiences for Students. I believe in staying on the leading edge of training

research and as a result my weight training program changes often. The primary consideration in

designing instruction is time availability; of note is the 50 minute class periods we have at our

school. After the change out process is accounted for we have 30-33 workable minutes which

does not include roll and warm-up activities.

Domain D: Planning Instruction and Designing Learning Experiences for Students.

In the world of PE, the content and expectations are simple and straight forward; students

are expected to pass the state required Physical Fitness Test. The minimum passing scores for the

PFT are displayed in Domain B: Assessing Student Learning, how we get our students to pass

the PFT is up to the individual PE teacher. In addition I am also a football coach who is

responsible for the strength and condition and serve as our offensive coordinator. With these

duties comes much preparation and research in effective planning and strategies.

Artifact 1 is a summer practice plan for our football program. Schedules of activities are

prepared months in advance (as in we schedule our entire year in January, weight training, speed

training, spring football, summer football, fall camp, etc.), then as we get closer to that date we

get into the details of each day and its activities. Football coaches are generally responsible for

coaching a specific position group and have additional duties. I am coaching the offensive line

(which contains 5 positions to monitor) and organizing the offensive installation schedule of

plays and schemes. Coaching is a fluid process and we pride ourselves on being able to adjust

quickly to the given circumstances. The practice plan is altered if we notice something that needs

to be additionally stressed or reviewed. Practice plans serve as an organizational tool and a map

of activities. Our practice plans are modified daily to address any particular need.

Artifact 2 is a 6 week weight training schedule that I created for my lifting class. I use a

combination of lifting and body resistance elements in my training. I cannot stress enough the

time constraints the PE department is under since we have gone to 50 minute class period. With

15 minutes of time allotted for the changing out process we are left with 35 minutes to take roll,

address and place our non-dress participants in a location to be observed as they do nothing, then

warm students up for the daily activity. I have adopted “super-setting” into my routine which

requires students to perform a body resistance exercise in between lifting sets. For example, to

prepare students to bench press I have them perform push-ups between squat sets prior to bench

pressing to prime their muscles; the trade-off is that students lose rest time which is

uncomfortable but they grow accustomed to the routine.

Artifact 3 is my yearly goals and objectives which is reviewed and approved by the

administrator who oversees our PE department. As PE is a performance based class it is

imperative that activities are organized and based around successful completion of the state

required PFT. I have taken great care in aligning my goals and objectives with our district policy

and philosophy, and with the Physical Education Model Content Standards for California Public

Schools Kindergarten through Grade 12; High School Course 3f Weight Training and Fitness.

My class philosophy is based around Standard 2: Students achieve a level of physical fitness for

health and performance while demonstrating knowledge of fitness concepts, principles, and

strategies. This focus standard is open ended in the fact that physical fitness can always be

improved; college athletes are bigger and stronger than high school athletes, pro athletes are

bigger and stronger than college athletes. My favorite aspect of this standard is that it is

completely subjective to performance; you get out what you put in and it based on individual

effort. These philosophies have been relayed and accepted by my administration.
