MIDTERM EXAMINATION

Subject: EE 158-POWER PLANT ENGINEERING Prepared by:

Exam Date: August 7, 2015
Time: 10:00 – 12:00 N.M. Engr. Marc-Eric E. Villanueva
Room:313

I. Modified True or False: Write True if the statement is correct and if the statement is
False, Encircle the word/phrase that made the statement incorrect and place your correct
answer on the answer sheet provided.

1. Coal-Fired Steam Plant is a thermal plant which makes use of mined coal as fuel in producing
electric energy.
2. Gas Turbine Plant is a thermal plant wherein the prime mover is an engine and which makes
use of combustible gas as a fuel in producing electric energy.
3. Pumped Storage Plant is a hydroelectric generating station associated with a water storage
reservoir.
4. Regulating plant is a generating plant that can carry a minimal load over a period of time.
5. Hot reserve is generating units on shutdown and not maintained at operating temperature but
available for service.
6. An electric generator uses mechanical power from the boiler and is converted into electrical
power through this equipment.
7. Penstocks prevent excessive pressure rises and drops during sudden load changes.
8. Power House is used to enclose and support the hydraulic turbine, generator, pressure
regulator (if used), and other auxiliaries.
9. Wind Turbines require an average wind speed of not less than 15 kilometers per hour.
10. Fission is the splitting of atoms into smaller pieces caused by electrons hitting each other.
11. Under supply of electricity, 1 gram of uranium in nuclear plant is equivalent to 5 tons of coal
used in coal-fired power plant.
12. Bataan nuclear power plant uses boiling water reactor as its main design.
13. Decomposition process is where the bacteria from a digester mixes from solid with liquid and
produces gas that is used in a biogas power plant.
14. Tail water reservoir is sometimes used to carry the water away from the draft tube or tailrace
reservoir.
15. Short period of usage and delivery is one of the main advantages of power barges during the
energy crisis in our country.

II. Conversion: convert the following

1. BTU/Hr → dyne-cm/sec. 3. Joules → quad 5. Joules/Kg → BTU/lb
2. Kcal/Kg → quad/lb. 4. KWHR → joules 6. KJ/Hr → Ft.-lb/sec

III. Problem Solving:

1. A coal fired thermal plant named MEV, has a maximum demand of 50MW and has a
boiler, generator efficiencies of 85%& 95%, Its load and capacity factor is given to be 0.6
and 0.5, the thermal plant consumes 1 slug per KWHR and the quality of coal used by
this plant costs 5 USD per ton, for the moment 1USD= 43.20Php. What will be its overall
turbine efficiency if the input power measurement in the turbine reads 34.7 MW?
Calculate a.) Overall thermal efficiency of the plant b.) coal bill per annum in Philippine
currency assuming bill will be charged based on the power output of the generator c.)
The reserved capacity of the plant if it’s installed capacity = maximum demand +
reserved capacity. Pin Po turbine

Determine
1. The daily energy output, 2. Average load of the combined load
3. Daily load of the combined load, 4. If the installed capacity of the
generating station is equal to the maximum demand and the load has
diversity factor of 1.2, what is the % savings?
