GENERAL OPERATION - the system is currently designed so that each control loop
runs independently of the rest of the system. There is not (at this point in time) a
sequence of operation for the system. There is not a startup nor a shutdown process.
Each control loop is set to run in automatic mode maintaining a certain, operator-
proveded setpoint based on the parameters set for each, individual loop. Loops can also
be run in manual mode which allows the operator to designate a specific output.
This system offers full manual control of all digital devices via the HMI (Human
Machine Interface / screen).
A full range of alarms (Low Low, Low, High and High High) can be set for each analog
input, along with a delay timer for each. Unnecessary alarms (which do not trigger
partial or full shutdowns of the system) can also be disabled at the operator’s discretion.
Each alarm consists of two bits (one for the actual alarm condition and another used to
trigger notifications or alerts). This enables alarm notifications to be silenced without the
system forgetting that an alarm condition still exists.
A full set of data registers is incorporated into the program for a dedicated modbus
interface. All data points are simplex (unidirectional) and include the complete scope of
inputs and outputs available on the HMI.
MAIN SCREEN
This screen is broken down into five sections, Operating Mode, Alarm States, Loop
States, Credentials and Navigation (unlabeled, bottom of the screen).
Operating Mode displays the current state of the control bits between this system and
DeltaV. Currently, these states are not logically tied to the actual operation of the
individual loops (pending the incorporation of a sequence of operation).
Alarm States shows at a glance what types of alarm conditions exist throughout the
system.
Loop States shows whether each of the 20 control loops are in MANUAL or AUTO
control mode.
Credentials is the section where an operator can enter a login and password to access
protected system configurations.
Navigation provides direct access to various screens to which the operator can navigate at
the touch of the button denoting the screen desired.
CONFIG (Program Exit) - button at the top/right of the screen allows the operator to exit
the HMI program and put the touchscreen into configuration mode (Note – this is not
necessary for normal operation of the system.)
HCS Standby Signal (Status Indicator) – turns green when the HCS Standby Signal is
absent, and red when the signal is present
HCS Run Signal (Status Indicator) – turns green when the HCS Run Signal is absent, and
red when the signal is present
HCS Run Signal (Status Indicator) – turns green when the HCS Run Signal is absent, and
red when the signal is present
HCS Shutdown Signal (Status Indicator) – turns green when the HCS Shutdown Signal is
absent, and red when the signal is present
Module Ready to Process Signal (Status Indicator) – turns green when the Module Ready
to Process Signal is absent, and red when the signal is present
Module Pre-Process Mode (Status Indicator) – turns green when the system is out of Pre-
Process mode, and red when the system is in Pre-Process mode
Module Run Mode (Status Indicator) – turns green when the system is out of Run mode,
and red when the system is in Run mode
Module Shutdown Mode (Status Indicator) – turns green when the system is out of
Shutdown mode, and red when the system is in Shutdown mode
ST Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no ST (Speed Transmitter) alarms are
present, and red when there is at least one, active ST alarm
PDT Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no PDT (Pressure Differential
Transmitter) alarms are present, and red when there is at least one, active PDT alarm
LT Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no LT (Level Transmitter) alarms are
present, and red when there is at least one, active LT alarm
PT Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no PT (Pressure Transmitter) alarms are
present, and red when there is at least one, active PT alarm
FT Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no FT (Flow Transmitter) alarms are
present, and red when there is at least one, active FT alarm
General Alarm (Status Indicator) - turns green when no alarms of any type are present,
and red when there is at least one, active alarm of any type
LOOP 1, FIC-7015 (Mode Indicator) – Displays “MAN” when the loop is in Manual
control mode, and “AUTO” when the loop is in automatic control mode
LOOP 2, TIC-7010 (Mode Indicator) – Displays “MAN” when the loop is in Manual

P&ID 1 SCREEN
This screen is the first of four process overview screens which contain a snapshot of all
instrumentation, loops and alarm conditions for the system.
The main part of this screen is the process overview. Descriptions of the various controls
and indicators can be found below. Some controls (faceplates) are hidden and cannot be
seen unless activated, at which time they appear above the screen shown above. For that
reason, these controls are shown and explained seperately, below.

shown by means of graduated vertical scales, while Setpoint and Output are also shown
numerically. Touching the LOOP SETUP button will navigate to the setup screen for
this loop where tuning parameters can be input. Touching the CLOSE button will cause
this faceplate to disappear revealing the P&ID screen below.

Process Variable (PV) value and Output (OP) value of the control loop. All three are

V-7010 (Device) – This representation is a dynamic graphic. It will fill with color
proportionate to the reading of the level inside.
P-7010 (Device) – This representation is a dynamic graphic. The gears will turn red
when the pump is running (even if the output is set to zero). Touching this device on the
screen will spawn the faceplate (shown below) which allows manual control of this
device.
P-7010 (Faceplate) – This houses the manual controls for the device. Touching the
START button will cause the device to run (at 0% output if this device is variable speed,
and 100% output otherwise). Touching the STOP button will deactivate the device.
Touching the CLOSE WINDOW button will cause this faceplate to disappear revealing
the P&ID screen below.

This screen is used to set up and tune the control loop (in the title).
This screen is broken down into four sections, Device Status, Loop Control, Alarm States
and Navigation (unlabeled, bottom of the screen).
Device Status displays the current status of digital devices within close proximity to the
control loop (red shows energized / active and green shows de-energized / inactive), as
well as the current, scaled values of any nearby analog instruments (as interpreted by the
PLC).
Loop Control houses all of the controls, setpoints and parameters necessary to setup, tune
and manage the control loop.
Alarm States shows the state of each alarm condition (LL, L, H and HH) for each of the
analog instruments shown in the Device status section. Red indicates a current alarm
condition and green indicates the alarm condition does not currently exist. For
convenience, also included in this section is a navigation button which, when pressed,
navigates to the Alarm Setup screen which contains the control of the alarms for the
Process Variable of this loop.

ALARM SETUP 1 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the first of six alarm setup screens
from which all alarm setpoints for the system can be input
ALARM SETUP 2 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the second of six alarm setup
screens from which all alarm setpoints for the system can be input
ALARM SETUP 3 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the third of six alarm setup screens
from which all alarm setpoints for the system can be input
ALARM SETUP 4 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the fourth of six alarm setup
screens from which all alarm setpoints for the system can be input

ALARM HISTORY (Navigation Button) – navigates to the Alarm History screen which
shows the log of all alarms the system has experienced
ALARM STATUS 1 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the first of two alarm status
screens which show all active alarms throughout the system
ALARM STATUS 2 (Navigation Button) – navigates to the second of two alarm status
screens which show all active alarms throughout the system
This screen is used to log and monitor the history of system alarms.
This screen is broken down into three sections, Alarm Log (unlabled), Alarm Controls
(unlabled) and Navigation (unlabeled, bottom of the screen).
Alarm Log shows the chronological log of alarm conditions the system has experienced
including the date and time of occurrence, the date and time of operator
acknowledgement and the actual alarm message displayed.
Alarm Controls provides the means to acknowledge, silence and reset alarms.
Navigation provides direct access to various screens to which the operator can navigate at
the touch of the button denoting the screen desired.
