SAMPLE LETTER REQUESTING SPONSORSHIP

(Library Letterhead)

(Date)

Dear …,

The __________________ Library is sponsoring a literacy event for school-age children in our
community called “The Reading Link Challenge”. This exciting project is designed to promote
the fun of reading and develop partnerships between schools and local public libraries.

Here’s how the program works. Interested students in grades 4 and 5 form teams and are
responsible to read and become familiar with a set of six selected books. At the first challenge
level teams within a school compete with each other answering questions in front of a
quizmaster based on their reading. The winning team at each school then goes on to the next
challenge level at the public library where the competition is repeated with a different set of
questions. At the final challenge level, a number of winning teams from different libraries come
together for a competition at a community event with a public audience.

At each level, students are encouraged to read a wide variety of literature, work as a team and
discover that reading can be a pleasurable lifelong experience. In order to make this event
successful, we are looking for community sponsors to help with some of the expenses.

We would be grateful if you could help by becoming a sponsor of “The Reading Link
Challenge” by (be specific e.g. providing funding for books, refreshments, prizes etc.). Your
support will be acknowledged (state how).

Please get back to me at (contact information) by _________, if you are interested in helping
our library provide this exciting reading experience for students. If you have any questions
about the project please feel free to contact me.

Yours truly,
