2. Explore

Ask the students if they can help you to create a list of the characters in
Because of Winn Dixie.
Now I want everyone to turn in their books and turn to a partner and discuss
some of the characters we have seen in Because of Winn Dixie.
As the students complete this walk around to make sure the students are on
task and being productive.

3. Explain

We will come together as a class and discuss the different characters the
students found and discuss their traits. We will discuss how their actions and
feelings progressed in the book.

4. Elaborate

I will then put the students in groups of three and give each student the
worksheet called The Three Elements of Characterization. I will assign each
group a character from the book and explain to the students that each person
needs to participate and contribute to the worksheet because they will be
presenting this in front of the class.

Reflection on lesson:
Overall I believe that this lesson went relativity well. I was very nervous to teach this lesson. It had been a long time
since I had read Because of Winn Dixie. The lesson was very interactive for the students, which kept them engaged
throughout the lesson. This lesson had a lot of group-based assignments which made it a little easier to control the class.
The teacher helped me to place the students in groups that would be successful and be productive and this was very
helpful. Some things I would consider in my future lessons would be to have smoother transitions. It was a little rough
with finding an effective way to transition.
