What do poets do?

Children will reflect on, explore, and share their feelings about starting a

This activity provides an opportunity to assist children to creatively explore feelings


through reflection, discussion, poetry and writing. This activity will help students
understand how authors use sound devices, figurative language, imagery, contrast, and
syntax to develop a certain tone or certain theme in the poem.

Students will complete a graphic organizer to analyze 4 poems.

Students will paraphrase the poem. Explain what is happening in the
poem through turn and talks.
Students will look for the different figurative language, imagery, the
deeper meaning, and the theme of each poem and write their notes
down on their paper.

Reflections: During this lesson the students were engaged and really gave great feedback during discussion. I notic that
the students became extremely excited when they discovered that they are going to e able to make their own poems,
which would let them become more creative in their writing. Due to the testing the students were going through, I felt
like the students needed something fun and more relaxed but still educational. While giving instructions I made sure I
explained what were doing and also have another student explain the instructions and again. I also noticed that I still
need to work on time management still because the lesson was not complete and some students were still on their third
or fourth poem.
