5TH GRADE WRITING LESSON RESULTS IN $900

FOR CHARITY
During Quarter 2, fifth graders learn how to write arguments, in the form of a
persuasive essay. In order to give this skill a real world connection, students were
given the task to research a charity of their choosing, and write an argument for

donation to that charity. During the research phase, each classroom held a penny
war, raising money that would later be donated. Students then wrote a fiveparagraph persuasive essay, convincing their peers to donate the money we raised
to their charity. After a vote in each classroom, Douglas Elementary School's 5th
graders will be donating more than $900 to the following four charities: Cystic
Fibrosis Foundation, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, The ASPCA and World Vision.
Way to go, 5th grade!!!!

CULTURE CORNER
