Retina

Examination
and
Drawing

Retina: a cup-shaped thin membrane.

Thickness: 110 at ora.
230 around macula.
What is ora serrata ?

Ora Serrata
The border between the retina and the
non-pigmented epithelium of the pars plana.
Does not run in a straight line.
Composed of forward pointed extensions of
retina dentate processes
Between dentae processes oral-bays

Anatomical Landmarks

Optic disc
Macula Fovea
Vortex veins
Medial and lateral long posterior
ciliary nerves and arteries

OD

Topographical Measurements
to be Remembered
Location of the ora 7.5 to 8 mm
from the
limbus.
Equator 13.7 mm from the limbus
I mm less nasally
1 mm more temporally

Methods of fundus
examination
Indirect Ophthalmoscopy
Slit lamp Biomicroscopy

Record landmarks that make the

holes easier to find at surgery.
Folds, pigment, hemorrhages, vortex
veins, and vessels can serve as
landmarks
The ora should be drawn only if it has
been examined
