Gibson Circle UMW Celebrates 100 years

Our Methodist Foremothers, women of the congregations

that would eventually become Missouri United Methodist
Church, organized the Womans Missionary Society in
1881 to help missions abroad and in the local church. By
1916, the women of the Broadway Methodist Church and
Methodist Episcopal Church, South, became very active
and formed four circle groups named after prominent
women in missions at that time--they were: Bessie Belle
Combs; Julia Cunningham; Maria Layng Gibson and Eliza
Perkinson.
Gibson Circle is one of 10 present circles of United
Methodist Women (UMW) and meets most months on the
third Thursday morning in the church Parlor. A hundred
years later, Gibson Circle is the only one carrying the
single name in honor of Maria L. Gibson who served from
1892 until 1921 as Principal of Scarritt Bible and Training
School in Kansas City, Missouri. (The original Cunningham
Circle became Bratton Cunningham Circle sometime
before 1960, merging with a group named in honor of
Kathryn Bratton.) We welcome anyone to join us to study
and work toward the goals of UMW. Contact Evette Nissen,
current Gibson Circle chair for more information.

bags for The Garden. The Memorial Prayer Garden Committee wishes to acknowledge and thank her for her generosity of
