July 1990:

The volcano came back


to life and first stirred,
earthquakes measured
7.8 on the Richter scale
100km northeast of
Pinotubo

April 2, 1991:
Fumeroles gave off
explosions near the
summit. Ash and dust
covered nearby villages,
triggering the
evacuation of 5000

Early June 1991:


Sulfur dioxide levels
had declined. Nearly
50000 had been
evacuated. Ash
ejections were
observed on June
3rd , followed by a
small explosion type
earthquake on June

First major eruption
occurred: ash and
smoke went 15km
high

June 15 1991:
Major Eruption occurs at
1:42pm local time and
lasted a full 9 hours. More
than 2000km^2 of villages
and land are blanketed
with Tephra. Cyclone Yuna
blows volcanic material in
all directions, also creating
Lahars that covered
hundreds of square
kilometers in muddy
