    that replaces a missing body part, which may be
    lost through trauma, disease, or congenital
    conditions. Prosthetic amputee rehabilitation is
    primarily coordinated by a pros thetist and an
    inter-disciplinary
    team
    of
    health
    care
    professionals including psychiatrists, surgeons,
    physical therapists, and occupational therapists.
    Orthoticsis aspecialtywithin themedicalfield
    concerned with thedesign, manufactureand
    application of orthoses. Anorthosisis "an
    externally applied device used to modify the
    structural and functional characteristics of the
    neuromuscular andskeletal system".

    become a prosthetist and orthotist is a four
    and half year degreein Prosthetics and
    Orthotics. The candidatesmust have
    cleared 10 + 2 with Physics, Chemistry,

    The nature of work of a prosthetist and


    orthotist involves various stages. To start with
    a P&O professionalworks as part of a clinical
    team which comprises of orthopaedics,
    physiatrists,
    nurses
    and
    related
    medicalprofessionals. They have to study
    records and reports of a patient regarding the
    suitable orthotic / prostheticaid required and
    then have to communicate appropriate
    information regarding this to the patients and
    theirfamilies.
