his father began to work to earn money.
However, Gregor scares away these boarders.
Gregor wanted to speak to his sister about how
he wanted to send her to music school to learn
how to play the violin. Gregor regrets this and
ultimately dies. Then, the family find out that
they had more money than they thought and
move to a better location. As the story
progresses Grete compassion towards Gregor

What mainly characterizes The Metamorphosis

is Franzs relationship with his father. His father
saw his as a failure because he wanted Franz
to become a successful businessman. Instead,
Franz became a successful writer and his
father abused him because of it. Also, it is
similar to some of Franzs diary entries where
he imagined the way he would die in many
different ways.

Character Analysis

Themes

Gregor Samsa: He becomes a large bug and

has a low self esteem. He believes he is a
burden to his family because he cannot support
his family and therefore his family would be
better off without him. Scares almost everyone
he comes across. His voice changed when he
became a bug and now he sounds like an
animal.

Loss of Compassion:
At the beginning of the story both Grete and
Gregors mother show compassion and
sympathy towards Gregor. They still see Gregor
as their son and want to take care of him for as
long as they can. However, towards the end of
the story they think that maybe Gregor is no
longer their son and think that it would be the
best option to let him go.

Grete Samsa: Gregors sister and at the

beginning of the story shows compassion
towards Gregor. However, towards the end she
loses that compassion and feels like they would
be better off without him. She is interested and
plays the violin.

Gregors Father- Gregors father is abusive and

sees Gregor as a failure because he no longer
pay their debt. Constantly hurts Gregor both
physically and mentally. He shows the least
amount of compassion towards Gregor in the
family. It seems as though he no longer cares
about Gregor.

Gregors Mother- Gregors mother is very weak

and cannot work. She is torn because she
loves Gregor but scared of his new
transformation. Like Grete, she cares about
Gregor a lot but towards the end of the story
she loses her compassion.

Loss of Family:
After Gregors transformation, his family starts
to see Gregor as an outsider. His change in
appearance made his a whole new person that
was no longer seen as a member of the family.
His personality and feeling for his family did not
change but his appearance did.

Motifs and Symbols

The apple lodged in Gregors back symbolizes
his relationship with his family. Slowly his
relationship is rotting away like the apple in his
back. His family no longer see him as a
member of the family.

The Picture of the woman in furs symbolizes
Gregors humanity. Gregor protects and tries to
hide the picture because it reminds him of his
humanity.

habits, and taste. Gregor no longer like the
same food, no longer looks the same, and no
longer works or walks on two legs.
Gregor's Appearance:
Gregor became a bug because he is seen as a
pest or an unwanted guest. He is seen as
nuisance that should be killed.
