SAFETY INPUTS for LAB

Grinding Machines
Because of severe injuries that can arise due to mishandling, incorrect mounting, assembly or
use only adequately trained persons must use these machines.
1. Ensure that the safety guards are in place before staring work and the work piece/tool
rest as close as practicable to the wheel. All personnel must wear goggles or face shields
before use.
2. After switching on, allow the wheel to made its designed speed before use.
3. Competent personnel specifically trained for these duties and appointed by their
supervisor will only carry out all maintenance, dressing and grinding wheel changing.
Compressed air
Extreme caution must be used when using compressed air, as it is delivered at high pressure. If it
enters the body it can rupture internal organs and cause serious injury and even death.
Do not attempt to clean off coveralls or clothing as it can force harmful particles through the skin.
Handling chemicals:
The control and safe use of hazardous substances are critical to the safe operation of any work
place that handles, uses, stores, transports or disposes of them, regardless of the quantity
involved. Although the hazards cannot be eliminated, the risk of harm occurring to personnel can
be controlled.
The following general guidance is applicable to most chemical substances:

Always consult the hazardous substances manual and the Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDS) for the handling, storage, disposal and emergency actions before attempting to
use any chemical substance.

Read all warnings labels on the containers under no circumstances should a product be
used that cannot be identified.

Ensure that all approved chemical containers are clearly labelled and scaled when not in
use.
Handling of chemicals must be restricted to personnel who have trained in their safe use.

Always wear protective gloves while handling chemicals & acids.

The storage of chemicals must be restricted to designated areas. These areas must have
the appropriate warning signs such as Corrosives, Acids, etc.

Collect all waste solutions and ensure disposal is via an approved operator, in
accordance with current legislation.

Do not keep chemical substances acids and reagents in open sunlight.

Never dispose off any waste solutions down the sink.
