Name: K-Yana James
Title of Project: Bare Necessities!
1

Project Start Date: January 5, 2015

Project Completion Date: April 1, 2015

In 40 words or more describe your project and the steps you performed to complete it. What did
you produce or perform?

For my senior project, I held an event at Lynnhaven Middle School called Bare Necessities! The
goal of the event was to help young women embrace themselves for who they are. Because my legal
research analysis topic was the malpractice of premature cosmetic surgery, I figured that to stop it, we
had to attack the route of the issue. During the event, I hosted many different interactive activities that
would help boost the girls self-esteem and self-appreciation. To pull this off, I had to first consult
with the student activities coordinator at Lynnhaven, Mrs. Hundley, in order to even have a set date
and place for my event. I then had to begin advertisement and collecting volunteers. Lastly, I had to
get supplies for activities and food for during event.
2

In at least 40 words explain how the project challenged you, and what sort of time challenges and
resource problems did you encounter?

Throughout completing this event, I encountered many things that helped me better myself, but I
also found issues that I had to overcome. I had to reevaluate many parts of my event when I realized
it was going to be too much for myself in the time span I had. I wanted to have my event open to all
middle school students and ninth grade students; however, that was going to be too expensive and
time consuming. I also ran into the issue of people cancelling on me the prior day of my event. It was
really stressful, but I found wonderful people to replace them.

List and then describe 5-8 fundamental ideas/concepts/skills of your project, which you learned
during your project.

Idea/Concept/Skill

Explanation

(how you learned it)

Reserving a vendor

I had to meet with the student coordinator at the middle school to reserve
the cafeteria for my project a couple of times before it finalized.

Planning an event

I spent hours of researching and evaluating plans for my project. I had to

figure out what would work, what the students would voluntarily do.

I had to design fliers, an Instagram, and a twitter to advertise my event

to the students and do it far enough in advanced.

Making a permission slip

In order for the students to stay after school, I had to create a permission
slip for the students to bring back before coming to my event.

Creating a skit

One of the activities in my event I had to form a script for the princess
skit I wanted to have to ease the tension with the students.

List and describe 5-8 problems you encountered in your project, and briefly describe how you
solved each.

Problem

Explanation

Research

Many of the cases I was looking for were not accessible considering my
topic was on adolescence and adolescent cases are not released to the
public, so I had to reevaluate my research.
The original date I wanted to schedule my event on was an early release
day for the middle school students, so I had to pick a date I thought would
work for everyone including my family, consultant, volunteers, and special
guests.
I was really nervous about the attendance of people who were at my event.
It was truly stressful because I felt with all my advertisement, it still was
not as many people I would have liked to be present. I invited old friends
and asked them to bring their sisters and/or friends that would be
interested in the topic.

How does your completed project compare to the picture you had in mind when you started the
project?
The project I had is actually really similar to what I imagined it to become. However, I
did want to have my event on a larger scale, like open to all middle school students, but
that would have been too time consuming and needed months of planning that I did not
have.

If given the opportunity, what would you do differently now that you speak from experience?
I would definitely find another audience or had picked another day for my event just so
more kids could have attended. I would have made sure that it was clear that I need
technology in order to forward my event. Also, I would have advertised more in advance,
although I started three weeks before my project, I think students needed it to be brought
to their attention more.

10 Now that the project is completed, explain/describe the stretch or challenge you
encountered/experienced.
The only thing I felt was challenging was having no technology during my event. I
wanted to show my presentation as I talked to the girls to they could follow along. It was
pretty much how I tied my topic to my project, and the fact that I could not show it,
hesitated me on how well the event was going to go. I also had volunteers cancel on me
the night before my project, even though they knew about it for a month. It was
frustrating because I hate last minute cancellations. Luckily, I was able to find people
willing to replace them.

11 Beyond the project itself, what did you learn about yourself?
I learned a great deal about myself. I realized that I can accomplish anything I put my
mind to when I am determined. I thought pulling off this task was going to be extremely
stressful. Although it did get tough, it felt like a breeze. I learned that I am really
passionate about the topic I chose than I thought. At first, I just picked it because I needed
a topic, but now, I can see myself doing more in this field to help the cause, like more
evnts like my senior project or volunteering.
12 What grade would you give yourself on the project? Justify the evaluation of your grade in at
least 25 words.
Grade: A
Justification: I used any time I had to organize my senior project sufficiently. In my eyes, my
project went very well. I accomplished the goal I wanted to in my senior project, which was for
the girls to understand the risks of cosmetic surgery, know that they are beautiful and no one can
make them feel less of a person. They had a great time at the event, and they understood how
each activity related back to body image and self-acceptance.
