What Is
One Laptop Per Child
?
The purpose of One Laptop Per Child is to provide children in countries with more limited educational
technology the opportunity to have laptops at a reasonable price. These laptops are of fairly simple
design, are sturdy, and they do not use too much power. They are relatively low-cost to make and ship
out (~$470) compared to the more typical modern laptops and computers that are being used (>$500).
These laptops are all new, so the bulkiness and slowness of an outdated computer is not a problem. As
many of these children go to school outdoors, the screen has been formatted to work in high amounts
of light, which is also useful for the solar charger. Why give laptops to these children without electricity
or running water? Education. These laptops are fully equipped with educational software across many
subjects: Astronomy (moon), Music and recording (TamTam), Movie making (Record, using the built-in
webcam), language (read and write), math (calculator, ruler and measure), computers and programming
(Pippy, Scratch, Terminal and log), art (Turtle art and paint), games (Implode, maze and memorize) and
connecting with other people (Neighborhood, WikiBrowse, Browse, Distance and Chat). With this base
software, as well as the ever-increasing list of downloadable software, these laptops will allow children
across the world to learn effectively and independently. That is the mission.

The Event
The event that we will be holding for our charity is a Carnival, the purpose for our Carnival is to raise
money for One Laptop Per Child foundation. The Carnival will be held in Iroquois Ridge, throughout the
property, from the football fields to the cafeteria, there will be lots of different events. The Carnival will
held in summer, on Saturday June 13th until Sunday June 14th. The way that we will raise money is by
donations and ticket sales. We will have a Goodwill-type stall with various donations up for sale, for
more income for the charity. The Carnival will also provide a bake sale where we will get families to
bake and bring different items to the Carnival. The tickets will be $2 if bought beforehand, and $3 day
of. Raffle tickets will also be sold at $1 apiece. There will be a variety of rides and attractions which will
mostly be inflatable, as well as stalls for games (with prizes provided by us and sponsors) and foods
(mostly sweets and B.B.Q.) acting as a midway. There will also be tournaments. Two different video
game tournaments will be played, one per day. It will require two dollars to enter and the winner of the
tournament receiving 50% of the pot. One day will be a Fifa 15 tournament , the next one will be Gran

turismo. (Both on the PS4) There will also be raffles for various prizes and a silent auction, with prizes
for both donated for the event. It will be open from 11am-9pm per day.

Financial Goals
We aim to raise $20,000. This amount is a high yet fairly realistic amount to accomplish within two
days, which equates to about 35 laptops for these children If factoring that the order for them is
<100000 units, they are being shipped door to door, the training to use them is needed to be paid for,
internet connection will be needed to be paid for and the amount is converted from Canadian to current
USD conversion rates (which, at time of typing, is currently $0.80 USD per Canadian dollar). This is only
assuming that this charity pays for all base costs, as well as placing the order. If we are only paying for
the laptops themselves, the amount of laptops we can provide is a little less than 62. The majority of
funding will be from sponsors, and midway rides will be rented at a set price which will allow us to keep
almost all profits for the organization. The Goal is to be able to pay for at least two classrooms worth,
as many of these countries are poor and could do with the financial aid for laptops for the children.

Promotion Strategies
To promote our fundraiser, we will use a variety of strategies, for example one of our strategies will
be to use our posters that we have created. Our poster is effective promotion because it highlights all of
some of the events, where it is taking place, the cost per ticket and our financial goals. By showing all of
these attributes for our Carnival, we advertise all the great things about the fundraiser and why they
should come. We will also be promoting in other ways, since the event is being hosted at Iroquois Ridge
High School, we will let the students go around advertising for us, the students will be encouraged to tell
their friends and family to come to the Carnival. The Carnival will need lots of extra hands to run it
smoothly, therefore we will need lots of teenage and adult volunteers. The students at Iroquois RIdge
can get their friends so that they can volunteer with them, further promoting that there is a fundraiser.
The last ways that we will be able to promote the event is by sending reminders and emails to the
parents that have kids attending Iroquois Ridge reminding them one last time to come to the fund
raiser. Using all of these different promotion strategies, we can ensure that people will come to our
event. Also by having a Carnival rides in a school parking lot will intrigue interest in the Joshua Creek and
surrounding communities.
