The text appears to be a musical setting of passages from the Passion of Christ according to St. John. It contains the parts for assembled crowds reacting to events in the narrative.

The text is a musical setting of passages from the Passion of Christ according to St. John. It contains vocal parts for crowds assembled at different points in the narrative.

The voices of the crowds seem to be singing about events from the Passion of Christ such as the crucifixion and reactions to Jesus' statements about being the King of the Jews.

Editorial note
Taken from Gradualia ac cantiones sacrae, 3-5vv Liber primus (London, 1605), vol.3 no.10
p2 - I -um, redundant sharp (should perhaps apply to the note that precedes it)
This edition only contains the parts for the assembled crowds; the voices of the narrator, Jesus and
other assorted characters are not contained in Byrd's original, nor are they included here. However,
the chant required for these extra voices can be found in the publication Cantus ecclesiasticus
domini nostri Jesu Christi... (Alexandro Gardano, Rome, 1586).
The English adaption here are freely-adapted words provided by the editor for use in the vernacular;
they are not drawn from any particular translation of Holy Scripture, but are readily useable with any
suitable translation of the narrative of the Passion according to St John.
All bracketed accidentals cautionary and editorial.
Where 'ij' appears to show a repetition of the text, this repetition has been expanded and denoted by
italic text underlay.
