Podocytes
Stellate epithelium that rest on top of the
fesebtrated capillary basement membrane.
Negatively charged, prevent small proteins
and negatively charged organic ions from
leaving the blood.

Filtration
1. Fenestrated capillaries block blood cells
and platelets
2. Thick basement membrane prevents
large proteins (albumin) and organic
anions from filtering out.
Filtration slits of podocytes and organic
anions from filtering out.

Mesangium
1. Between capillaries, can be mistaken from
pericytes.
Functions:

a. support capillaries in within glomerulus

b. Phagocytosis of protein and

antigen/antibody complexes
3. Secretion of immune system compounds such
as prostaglandins and cytokines.
4. Secrete erythropoietin

Support, filtration,

Contract with sympathetic
stimulation. May assist

Secrete renin
