Course Information:
In this course students will explore various types of science including Biology, Earth Science and Light
through inquiry-based learning. Students will be expected to meet all reading and writing standards in
science content. Upon completion of this class, students will have knowledge of concepts, skills and
procedures needed for future science classes.
Classroom Expectations:
1. Respect- others and their belongings in words and actions.
2. Prepare- have all materials needed for class- pen/pencil and paper, listen and follow directions
3. Achieve- participate in discussions, stay on task, turn in all assignments.
4. Dress- be in dress code at all times; belts, tucked in shirts, jackets/purses in locker

Additional Supplies:
The following supplies are used daily. Parents and students are welcome to donate the following
supplies to the classroom: Kleenex, paper towels, hand sanitizer and Lysol wipes.
Absent/Late Work Policy:
If a student is absent it is up to the student to retrieve any work they missed while gone. Students will
have the number of days absent plus one additional day to turn in makeup work. If a test or quiz was
scheduled on the day of an absence the student will need to set a time to make this up within one
school week otherwise it will be a zero. Missed labs will be discussed upon the students return.
Students should work bell to bell in order to complete daily work. Additional time should not be needed
for any classwork.
Vocabulary:
Students will be responsible for keeping a vocabulary notebook throughout the school year. I am
requiring that students complete all vocabulary work in a composition notebook. Students will lose
points if vocabulary is not completed in the notebook. The weekly vocabulary work is expected to be
done at home. Vocabulary will be assessed on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.
Projects:
Students will have to write one science journalism article for their writing portfolio. This piece MUST be
completed for 9
th
grade promotion. Students may have at most one project, per term, that requires
both class and home time. Students will receive project guidelines and deadlines in a timely manner.
Technology:
Students and parents MUST sign the JCPS acceptable use of technology policy to participate in any
activities that involve students using their own devices i.e. smart phones. If students do not have the
form on file an alternative activity will be given to the student. Teachers have the right to confiscate
electronic devices that are not being used for instructional purposes.
Helpful Information:
1. Students are expected to participate in class daily.
2. I am available for additional assistance upon request for students actively trying in class.
3. Please check Parent Portal to keep up with the grades. Please contact me with any concerns or
questions.
4. Copying and cheating are not allowed, as they are not beneficial to either party involved. Work is
needed to check understanding of each student not a collective group. Incidences of academic
dishonesty will be dealt with according to the code of conduct.
5. Remind 101- I will be sending updates and reminders through text using Remind101. Please sign up
for this free program. Directions are listed in the Colts team handbook.
6. The website moorecolts.weebly.com will also be used to list things that are going on in my class.

Grading Scale:
This year I will be implementing a standards based grading policy. For each key focus topics, learning
targets have been identified. Students must demonstrate some level of learning on every learning target
to pass the course. Scores will be assigned on a 4, 3, 2, 1, 0 basis, based on the students level of
performance on each key focus topic and/or learning target.

Performance
Indicator
Description Grade
Equivalent
4: Distinguished Student can understand the standard/learning target completely
and can explain them in detail. They can independently
demonstrate extensions and applications of the standard/learning
target. They can make connections between this standard/learning
target and other standards/learning targets they have used this
year.
A
3: Proficient Student understands the important things about the
standard/learning target. They can apply the standard/learning
target to other content.
B
2: Competent Student has a general understanding of the standard/learning
target. They can correctly define, explain, and identify concepts.
They are progressing towards proficiency.
C
1: Novice Student needs more instruction. They do not understand the
standard/learning target and cannot define related vocabulary.
They need more support from their teacher.
I
0: No Basis Student has not completed any work and so has not demonstrated
any understanding of the standard/learning target.

Grade Calculation Categories:

40% Formative (assignments graded for accuracy and used to provide feedback, inform instruction and
track student progression)
40% Summative (tests which serve as a final indicator of a students knowledge and ability on that key
focus topic)
20% Reflection (students self-assess their progress on each learning target; class participation and
homework is also included in this category)
