TOPIC 5 : BASIC COUNSELING SKILLS INTERVENTION SKILLS

DEFINITION OF INTERVENTION
A process of changing and opening problematic thoughts, feelings and behavior so that they will explore, improve and restore their self-confidence.

Interventions are usually applied to deal with the personal problems that are very excessive. The problems include smoking, drug abuse, fighting, and so on. This skill is often used in case the client is experiencing emotional distress and mental problems that is harmful towards them and the people around.

DIRECT INTERVENTION
Involving clients (actors) whether individual or as a group. Held face to face without any boundaries. To discuss about the causes and reinforcement methods towards the action taken by client.

INDIRECT INTERVENTION
Co-operation from clients family. Conducted for researching the ins and outs of the client in detail. Able to solve problems more efficient.

EARLY INTERVENTION IN CHILDREN

DEFINITION
To provide treatment, rehabilitation, counseling and advice to children and parents as soon as a problem is detected or identified experienced by children. (Kail, 2001)

TEACHER-CENTERED
Methods for teaching and students with learning disabilities and behavioral problems. Fully require teachers to play a major role in teaching and remedial process. In this method, teacher is the one who determines the type of strategies that need to be used, models and demonstrations, giving direction to the children and monitor their progress.

CHILDREN-CENTERED
Suitable for students who are able to control their own behavior (Graham, Harris and Reid, 1993). The term student-centered take on the image that the students are independent, self-reliant and able to handle remedial processes in normal classes.

FAMILY-CENTERED
Family-centered interventions require a strong commitment from every member of their family. Indirectly, this approach is also able to strengthen family relationships and enhance the understanding of the needs of individuals with special needs.
