Description: Speaker: Dr. Hari Balakrishnan, Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cambridge, USA .

With over a billion broadband mobile devices active today, wireless is becoming the dominant form of Internet access. Mobile and wireless networks are, however, very different from the traditional Internet: mobility causes connections to break, mobile devices have multiple wireless technologies available, and rates and delays over wireless channels vary a lot. These new realities cause today's protocols and applications to perform poorly (or not at all). I will describe Mosh and Sprout, two new protocols to overcome these problems. Mosh is a remote terminal application with a novel approach to mobility, and has become a popular SSH replacement for mobile users since its release last year. Sprout is an end-to-end method using stochastic forecasts to deliver high throughput while bounding delays, ideally suited for video applications. Sprout handily outperforms various TCP variants as well as Skype, Google's Hangout, and Apple's Facetime over cellular networks. Mosh is joint work with Keith Winstein; Sprout is joint work with Keith Winstein and Anirudh Sivaraman (Keith and Anirudh are my PhD students). Please visit http://mosh.mit.edu & http://alfalfa.mit.edu for more details on Mosh and Sprout, and http://wireless.csail.mit.edu for research being done at the Wireless@MIT Center.
