Emily Evans Module 1 Text Set Discussion Forum My literature circle book was Freedom on the Menu: The

Greensboro Sit-Ins. This book is about protesting against segregation during the civil rights movement. I decided to search for other sources related to the civil rights era to complete my text set. I conducted these searches through Joyner Library, the Teaching Resources Center, and internet searches. The amount of resources available on this subject is abundant. I chose four different resources that all bring something different to the table including: an autobiography, a graphic novel, a chapter book, and a fiction book. All of these resources are related to the civil rights era. The autobiography is of Ruby Bridges who was also a young African American female dealing with inequality because of discrimination. The graphic novel depicts the life of Martin Luther King Jr. who is mentioned in Freedom on the Menu. The chapter book and fiction book are both about people/families living during that time period and their experiences with discrimination. 1. McKissack, P., & Pinkney, J. (2001). Goin' someplace special. New York: Atheneum Books for Young Readers.

This book is about a young girl Tricia Ann who wants to go someplace special. She encounters many examples of segregation along her journey such as having to sit in the back of the bus and not being able to sit on a bench. Her special place ends up being a library where all people are welcome. This book would be good for grades 3-5. 2. Curtis, C. (2000). The watsons go to birmingham. Laurel Leaf.

This book is about the Watsons, a black family, who travel south to Birmingham, Alabama to visit their grandmother and keep Byron out of trouble. It takes place in 1963 during tough racial times and their grandmothers church is blown up in an act of hate. This book would be good for grades 68. 3. Bridges, R. (1999). Through my eyes. Scholastic Press.

This book is about Ruby Bridges who was the first African American student at an all white school. She recounts the struggles and hard time she faced at such a young age. This book could be used in grades 2-3. 4. Joeming, D. (2002). Martin luther king jr.. (Vol. 2). Graphic Planet.

This graphic novel depicts the story of Martin Luther King Jr. It gives details about his childhood and education. It then tells about his accomplishments as a civil rights activist. This book would be used in grades 3-6.
