NCEI maintains a suite of monitoring services that track key climate indicators using objective methods to provide historical context for current environmental conditions. Climate Monitoring services supply detailed information about temperature and precipitation, snow and ice, drought and wildfire, storms and wind, and weather patterns.
Monthly Climate Reports
NCEI Monthly Climate Reports summarize recent conditions and events, with an emphasis on providing historical context. There are two reports each month: one for the U.S. and the other for the globe. We generally release both reports in the second week of each month, the national report preceding its global counterpart by several days. The reports are part of the suite of climate services NOAA provides to government, business, academia, and the public to support informed decision-making.
Climate at a Glance
Climate at a Glance is an interactive tool that provides analysis of near real time precipitation and temperature data on global and national (U.S.) scales. It can be used to compare current conditions with the historical record, and is designed for climate variability and change research applications. Each spatial scale includes mapping, timeseries, ranking, and Haywood plotting applications, along with information about the project’s history and development.
Billion-Dollar Disasters
NCEI’s Billion-Dollar Weather and Climate Disasters report is a standard reference for understanding the economic scope of climate change in the United States. This growing suite of disaster data, services, and products is used to examine past events and gauge future risk.
Managing the fallout of extreme events has become particularly challenging in recent years. The U.S. has sustained 323 individual weather and climate disasters that caused at least $1 billion in damages since 1980 for a combined cost of more than $2.2 trillion during that time frame. The National Hurricane Center, the reinsurance industry, and catastrophe modelers incorporate this information into their assessments to contextualize risk and loss potential for communities.
