The Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research
The Center of Excellence for Climate Change Research (CECCR) was established in March 2010 in King Abdulaziz University (KAU), with a mandate to carry out state-of-the-art research in the field of weather, climate and climate change. The CECCR specializes in studies of several aspects of weather and climate, using a large range of numerical models to perform weather and climate simulations and predictions, ranging from regional to global scales.
The Center utilizes the KAU "Aziz" Supercomputer, which has 12,000 CPUs and 7.5 PB storage capacity, to perform its weather and climate simulations. Besides this, the Center is developing a detailed climate database that can be used to perform application-oriented studies. The CECCR also provides technical support and scientific consultations to decision makers in the governmental and non-governmental sectors to enhance their adaptability and resilience against adverse impacts of weather extremes and climate change. Moreover, the Center aims to nurture a group of researchers capable of addressing the scientific challenges posed by the sensitivity of an arid climate.
King Abdulaziz University
King Abdulaziz University (KAU) was established in 1967 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as a national university aimed at spreading higher education in the western province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. In 1974, KAU was converted to a public university by a resolution of the Council Ministers of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The government's adoption and continuous support for this young university have had a great effect on transforming KAU into a modern university. The university occupies a distinguished place among higher education institutions in the Kingdom. KAU has more than 4,500 PhD-holding staff and around 46,000 students from 60 different countries, and its research productivity and knowledge-transfer output play a vital role in the society. It has 16 centers of research excellence, 24 scientific chairs and a research endowment.
