Viola Davis has already earned some film awards and she will undoubtedly do so with her role in The Woman King. The story of the West African kingdom of Dahomey (present-day Benin), which, like just about the rest of Africa, had to do with Americans and Europeans who came to get slaves and raw materials. It is no secret that Africans themselves took part in the trade for their own share of power and wealth. This time, The Woman King does not tell the story from the perspective of the settlers with the cliché 'good guy' who has good intentions for the local population, but from the African population themselves.
Viola Davis is the leader of a group of female warriors. But the film is more than just another battle. A film full of action, but also emotion and wonder. The film does not shine in the first place in the cinematography, although it is nicely done with the necessary setting and costuming. But the film manages to give a film with a somewhat simple story the necessary layering and to be more than the good against the bad with fascinating characters.

I thought it was pretty good. Certainly didn't feel woke anywhere because that's a buzz nowadays. Whether it is historically correct or not, that will really bother me with this film. It's a film with a great story, good chemistry between the characters, you could feel the bonds that were formed throughout the film. Viola Davis is very strong. It also has that typical African atmosphere. I didn't think so, but I liked the movie. Overall better than expected and worth a look.

Reasonable historical adventure film. The story is simple and whether it makes sense historically or not… just take it for granted. The effect is good. The build-up is strong and drama and action alternate well. The film looks fine. The action scenes look a bit too rehearsed, just like the entire decoration, which is also just a bit too neat. The film also lacks some rawness which wouldn't have been out of place. The acting is also fine. Great movie, but a little too sterile. 3.5/4.0
