James Payne

James Payne is an architect, writer and senior lecturer in architecture. He has taught at London Met since 2008 as a design, technology and dissertation tutor and is currently responsible for technical subjects in postgraduate architecture. Together with architect Nina Lundvall, he has also taught design studios in other universities in the UK and Sweden.

James has written for UK and European architecture and art journals as well as contributing to the Phaidon 20th and 21st Century Architecture Atlases. The recent Formgivers lecture series he curated (at London Met and online as part of the AF 100-day studio) explored the work of a new generation of European architects.

His special interests lie in the meeting of furniture and architecture, lightweight and pre-fabricated construction. His practice Archipelago was invited to represent the UK in an Architecture Foundation exchange of young practices with Finland in 2013, and was included in the New Architects 3 book of the top 100 young UK practices.

Outside of architecture and away from the city, James is a keen practitioner of outdoor pursuits including all forms of on and off-road cycling, running, mountaineering and ski touring.
