Research Prototypes Developed
  • FisherMesh Platform: We developed a wireless mesh network platform for intra-boat communication for fishing vessels in South India.
  • CalMesh: I was leading the networking research of the following three NSF-sponsored research projects: ITR-RESCUE (www.itr-rescue.org), Responsphere (www.responsphere.org), and SGER-CogNet (http://cognet.calit2.net). As part of RESCUE and Responsphere projects, I led the team that developed the first version of CalMesh platform (http://calmesh.calit2.net) based on which the Extreme Networking System (ENS), a research artifact for ground-zero communications during crises situations, is developed. The ENS system was adjudged as the fourth level research artifact by NSF among all the research funded by NSF in 2006. The fourth level is considered as the second to the flnal stage and ENS was the only artifact from the Information Technology Research (ITR) division of NSF that was considered for the pre-flnal research artifact selection process. The ENS artifact is used in several medium and large-scale homeland security drills and found to be efficient for ground zero communications.
  • CalNode: I developed the CalNode, a prototype for Cognitive Network Access Point (CogNet AP), which is the flrst Cognitive Network Access Point for ISM band. This device has the ability to autonomously collect historical traffic information and dynamically alter the protocol parameters based on the observed spatio-temporal characteristics of the traffic proflle. The CalNode prototype is in the invention disclosure stage. Details of the CogNet project can be found at http://cognet.calit2.net and www.cognet.info.
  • CogNet testbed: I led the team that developed the CogNet testbed which is the flrst testbed for Cognitive Wireless Networking. This testbed has about three dozen CalNodes used as Cognitive Access Points. It is a centrally controlled collection of CalNodes that can be operated in the following two modes: (i) a large-scale wireless traffic monitoring testbed or (ii) a cognitive enterprise wireless network. In the wireless traffic monitoring testbed form, the testbed is able to collect, process, and repositorize the spatiotemporal traffic characteristics in a central Cognitive Repository. On the other hand, in the cognitive enterprise wireless network mode, the network is able to provide regular wireless network services in an enterprise network or campus-wide network form.
