The Story of G.I. Joe
The Story of G.I. Joe is a 1945 American war film directed by William A. Wellman and based on the writings and experiences of famed war correspondent Ernie Pyle.
Ernie Pyle (Burgess Meredith), a rookie war correspondent, is embedded with Company C of the 18th Infantry Regiment, led by untested Lieutenant Bill Walker (Robert Mitchum). A the men fight up through North Africa and up the length of Italy during World War II, Pyle writes and records his experiences with the infantrymen, recording the entire breadth of the human experience- triumph, tragedy, and everything in between. Filmed in 1944, Ernie Pyle himself visited the set three months prior to being killed at Iejima, an island off Okinawa Honto.
The following weapons were used in the film The Story of G.I. Joe:
Rifles
M1 Garand
The M1 Garand is used by the majority of US Army infantrymen. Unlike some other films made during World War II that used older weapons to substitute for the M1 Garand since they were in demand for the actual war, this film, made with the assistance of the US Army, was provided with authentic equipment.
M1 Carbine
US infantry also uses the M1 Carbine
M1903 Springfield
Some US Army soldiers use the M1903 Springfield.
Mauser Gewehr 1898
Wehrmacht infantry are seen with the Gewehr 1898. This older rifle was used primarily by militia and rear-line units in German service during World War II, and thus is likely standing in for the Karabiner 98k that was standard-issue for German forces during the war.
Submachine Guns
M1928A1 Thompson
M1928A1 Thompsons are used by US Army officers and NCOs.
Machine Guns
.50 AN/M2
Some .50 AN/M2 machine guns, removed from their usual aircraft mounts, are mounted on US Army vehicles.
Browning M2HB
The Browning M2HB is mounted on various US Army vehicles.
M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle
A US soldier is seen firing an early M1918 Browning Automatic Rifle, as opposed to the M1918A2 Browning Automatic Rifle used more commonly in World War II.
Browning M1919A4
The Browning M1919A4 is seen carried in one scene.
Launchers
M1A1 Bazooka
The M1A1 Bazooka is used by American G.Is.
