Gamera vs. Zigra (1971)

Gamera vs. Zigra (ガメラ対深海怪獣ジグラ Gamera tai Shinkai Kaijū Jigura, lit. "Gamera vs. Deep Sea Monster Zigra") is a 1971 Japanese kaiju film produced by Daiei Motion Picture Company. It is the seventh Shōwa Gamera film and seventh entry in the franchise overall. It was directed by Noriaki Yuasa and written by Nisan Takahashi. It was released on July 17, 1971 as a double feature with a re-release of the 1958 film Suzunosuke Akado: The Birdman with Three Eyes which was also made by Daiei Motion Picture Company.

The plot of the film revolves around the alien Zigra, a giant shark like monster from a dying planet who has come to Earth to enslave humanity and use them as a food source. Gamera steps forward to oppose the invader in an underwater battle off the cost of Kamogowa, Japan, but Zigra proves to be an even more powerful sea monster than even the heroic turtle himself. Now Gamera must figure out if Zigra has a weakness to exploit and stop his invasion of Earth. All while Zigra's spy, Agent X (Eiko Yanami), hatches plans of conquest for her master.

This film would become the last Gamera film to be produced by Daiei Motion Picture Company as they went bankrupt the same year, but not the last Shōwa Gamera film as their successor, Daiei Film Co., would go on to produce the last Shōwa Gamera film, Gamera: Super Monster, also directed by Noriaki Yuasa and written by Nisan Takahashi, which would become their last feature length Gamera film. Daiei Film Co. would also produce the first three Heisei Gamera films, Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris before they too would go bankrupt.

M61 Vulcan

A group of Mitsubishi F-104J Starfighters are set out to drop bombs and missiles into ocean in an attempt to destroy Zigra's spaceship which also doubles as a submarine, they put up a valiant effort but are ultimately shot down by the energy rays from his ship. Interestingly the aircraft are portrayed by both models and footage of real F-104 Starfighters. The gun port for their M61 Vulcans can be seen on the left side of their nose but goes unused.
