Student Evaluation of Teaching

Feedback Ecosystem

Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET)

Student Evaluation of Teaching is a key instrument for providing feedback on educational process at HSE University. SET data can be used in many ways:

  • Students can reflect on their study experience and offer suggestions on how to improve it;
  • Instructors may receive feedback on their job performance and analyze their syllabi and teaching techniques;
  • Educational programme leadership can use it to advance their curriculum development;
  • Departments, schools and faculty administration can better update teaching workload and staffing;
  • HSE administration obtains broader views on how to enhance overall education quality.

SET is mandatory and anonymous. All students must complete the SET questionnaire, since these results can be more reliable than the feedback from just a handful of successful students. However, it is notable that the students’ responses are fully anonymous – they have the opportunity to leave truthful and thorough comments, while instructors and administrators can make decisions based on the summarized data.

SET is held FOUR times a year at the end of each module and lasts THREE weeks before the exam period. The SET form features questions on the quality of teaching and the organization of regular courses, MOOCs, project activities, and educational process in general.

Student Evaluation of Programme Administration

The student evaluation of educational programmes administration (SEPA) is an annual questionnaire where students evaluate the quality of educational processes and the role of programmes’ academic supervisors, managers and study offices, as well as the performance of faculty and other related University services.

HSE Faculty and the University’s administration use SEPA results to improve support for educational programmes, as well as to make staffing decisions.

How is SET conducted?

Rate and comment on courses that have interim assessment as part of the module

Provide numerical grades and comments on instructors who oversaw the courses

Share responses on MOOCs that the students have taken along with the regular courses

Rate and comment on project activities that they completed over the past year

Write reviews on courses with interim assessments planned for future modules

Comment on the general organization of educational processes
