Above is a postcard sold at Fort Benning, Georgia (home of the United States Army Infantry School) it depicts a rifle squad in various fighting positions with the ‘new’ M14 Rifle. The superimposed caption (originally printed on the reverse) explains how the M14 has replaced 3 categories of infantry weapon previously used by the US Army. It was intended to replace the M1Garand semi-automatic battle rifle, the .45 calibre submachine gun and the Browning Automatic Rifle. The M14 would prove not to be as 'versatile’ as hoped, it was too light to function as a light machine gun and too heavy to be fired fully automatic to replace the submachine gun.
