  1. (n) forty-five
    A game of cards, played with a full pack, in which each trick counts five and the game is forty-five. Five cards (two and three or three and two) are dealt to each player, and the top card after dealing is turned as the trump. The ace of hearts is always a trump, ranking next below the knave of the trump-suit, which is itself second in rank, the live-spot being highest. The other cards have their normal value, except that in the black suits the lowest spot-card takes the trick when no face-card is played. Suit must be followed when a trump is led, but in other cases a player may trump if he chooses. A player taking all five tricks in one hand wins the game.

Usage in poetry
His talk is all of things long past,
For modern facts no pleasure yield—
Of the famed year of forty-five,
Of William, and Culloden's field.
And usually, there behind the yards,
The number forty or the early mail
Would overhaul me, pulling hard,
But the six forty-five was my own train.
H was a high-cultured Hound
Who could clear forty feet at a bound,
And a coon once averred
That his howl could be heard
For five miles and three-quarters around.
Though I can't afford a hunter -more's the pity,
I love a rousing gallop like the rest!-
Every morning as I travel to the city
I have five and forty minutes of the best.
An' sae I'll begin wi' the rev'rend John Bouir;
By ilk ane that ken'd him belov'd to this hour:
It's years forty-five since he gade to his rest;
His mem'ry is blessed, he rests wi' the blest.
I would not have the horse I drive
So fast that folks must stop and stare;
An easy gait—two forty-five—
Suits me; I do not care;—
Perhaps, for just a single spurt,
Some seconds less would do no hurt.
