- Synopsis
- Beijing, Autumn 2004: Jia Zhang-ke is filming The World, his fourth full-length feature film after the European success of his previous films. He is forced to work in precarious conditions, shooting with no official permission, yet he does not pose as a rebel or a martyr. He lights a candle and says a brief prayer to start filming. Apart from that, he does what he has to do, with complete assurance. This portrait of a living Chinese filmmaker who is already considered as one of the greats is full of subtle nuances. It also presents the portrait of a country where artists are still obliged to work in secret.
