- Director Sam Peckinpah's only war movie, "Cross of Iron", is filmed from the perspective of German soldiers lost in a hopeless cause on World War II's Eastern Front. Sergeant Steiner (James Coburn), a well respected squad leader, and his ragged group of soldiers face not only hordes of Russian infantry and tanks, but the deadly personal agenda of glory-seeker Captain Stransky (Maximilian Schell) as well.
