iPhone 15 Plus specifications
The 6.7” iPhone 15 Plus is available in five colours: pink, green, yellow, blue and black. It weighs in at a modest 201g – which is 2g lighter than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Plus.
The handset is constructed with ‘aerospace grade’ aluminium and features the same Ceramic Shield coating on its display as previous iPhones.
The Super Retina XDR OLED screen is incrementally improved on the iPhone 14’s, with a slighter higher resolution of 2556×1179 pixels. In terms of brightness, the iPhone 15 Plus tops out at 2,000 nits (a nit is the standard unit of measurement for smartphone display brightness).
The main camera offers three levels of zoom: 2x telephoto zoom for close ups, 1x zoom for middle-distance shots and 0.5x for ultra-wide angle shots.
Another big alteration is the replacement of the mute switch, something that’s always featured on iPhone, with the new, programmable, Action Button. The Action Button can be set to carry out one of a selection of tasks, as chosen by the user. For example, pressing it can open the camera.
In terms of processing power, Apple has taken the A16 Bionic processor from the Pro tier of last generation’s iPhone and put it in iPhone 15 Plus. Apple says the chip is 40% faster than that of the iPhone 12. The chip is paired with 6GB of RAM.
Another big change is the addition of a USB-C charging port, in place of Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector. Apple has made this change to comply with EU regulations but has previously used the connector in its other devices.
iPhone 15 Plus also runs iOS17, the new update to Apple’s mobile operating system (OS). It brings with it new features such as video voicemails and photo/wallpaper caller ID.
Apple’s Dynamic Island – its name for the way it disguises the camera-housing notch at the top of the display – is back and gives contextual notifications, reminders and other information.
Insuring your iPhone 15 Plus
You can visit our dedicated iPhone insurance page for details of specific deals to cover your iPhone 15 Plus.
Gadget insurers like Protect Your Bubble, Gadget Cover and CoverCloud offer standalone policies for mobile phones and other electronic devices. Because cover is tailored for gadgets, it is often more comprehensive and typically includes:
- liquid/water damage
- theft
- mechanical failure
- accidental damage (e.g. cracked screen)
- loss
- unauthorised calls (if your handset is stolen).
Cover is usually worldwide too, so your iPhone 15 Plus will be covered outside of the UK, and there’s typically no limit on the number of claims you can make each year, though some insurers limit loss and theft claims.
In terms of costs, insuring a 128GB iPhone 15 Plus with CoverCloud, for example, would cost £6.34 per month with its Elite package (which includes cover for loss, theft and unauthorised calls). Paying annually rather than monthly works out even cheaper.
Before buying a standalone insurance policy, however, there are a few things to be aware of:
- claim are subject to excess – typically somewhere between £50 and £150. The higher the level excess a policyholder opts for, the less they’ll pay in monthly premiums
- some insurers prohibit claims in the first two weeks of a new policy
- insurers expect you to take ‘reasonable precautions’ to keep your gadget safe from theft, loss or damage
