France Under-21 manager and Arsenal legend Thierry Henry has already told Chelsea why they must press ahead in their pursuit of Elye Wahi.

The Blues are in the market for a striker this summer, with numerous options being explored by Enzo Maresca’s side.

Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran, Napoli star Victor Osimhen and Lille ace Jonathan David are among those to have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with Chelsea’s long-standing interest in Wahi resurfacing.

The Blues pushed to sign the 21-year-old last summer from Montpellier but the Frenchman opted to join Lens instead. However, the snub has not deterred Todd Boehly and co, and Chelsea are reportedly still interested in the £30million-rated striker.

Wahi has received plenty of praise for his development in the Ligue 1, and ex-Gunners hero Henry spoke at length about what the Lens star is capable of last year.

Speaking to CBS Sports after Wahi had impressed by scoring in his side’s 2-1 win over Arsenal in the Champions League, Henry said: “This guy you see on the screen had a hell of a finish on the second goal.

“Elye is special. Lens loves to play with their wing-backs – we are going to talk about how he stayed away from (William) Saliba.

“You will see that you don’t need to break your neck. He will beat you to the first post. Stay in a good position between the two lines, Frankowski sees it and Wahi does that to a tee. He can finish so well.”

Despite only joining the club 12 months ago, Lens will be hoping to make a sizable profit on Wahi if they are to part ways with the forward this summer.

However, if the striker continues to develop as many are expecting then it could be money well-spent by Chelsea.

They have already conducted business with Lens this summer, allowing Malang Sarr to join the Ligue 1 outfit as a free agent.

The Frenchman struggled for minutes under several different managers at Chelsea and was therefore allowed to depart without the risk of a transfer fee deterring the few clubs who did emerge and show a willingness to acquire his services and attempt to get his career back on track.

The Blues will be hoping that their goodwill gesture, of sorts, could put them in a strong position to negotiate a cut-price deal for Wahi if they make him their top striker target.
