But several odds stood in his way—lack of money, insufficient education, and moral support. Will he make it to the NY Stock Exchange as a stockbroker or will his dream be squashed before it begins? Will Louisville construction worker be the only job ever on his resume? Or with divine intervention, can he surmount the impossible odds to reach his dream? NOTE TO THE READER
Thank You, my Lord Jesus for this finished work!
Thank you for reading JABEZ! I’m excited to share JB’s story in this novella with you. JABEZ is book 1.5 of the After Christian Inspirational Series. I meant to share this story with you right before publishing AFTER Book 2, but life got in the way (or it wasn’t God’s time for it to happen).
I overcame several obstacles while writing this book.
Today, I couldn’t be happier to share this story with you, praying from the depth of my heart that it brings you hope, faith in Christ, and total focus on Him and His plan for your life. God bless you!
To JESUS, My Promise Keeper

JABEZ
If it had not been the Lord who was on our side, let Israel say, if it had not been the Lord who was on our side, when men rose up against us; then they would have swallowed us alive,
- Psalm 124:1-3
JB Patrickson rested his head on his plane seat’s headrest, glanced at the blue and clear-white clouds out the small window. He wondered how his wife of four hours would respond to the story he was about to tell—one which he’d told no one except the witnesses to the events in Kentucky many years back. Oh, God, this is such a risk. May she not walk away from me.
How sad it would be if his marriage ended on day one or at all. He sent up another quiet prayer that she would see him as who he was now, not his past that no longer represented his identity. Then he followed it up with thanksgiving to God for rewriting his story permanently.
JB, I’m here. I love you, and I won’t leave you, okay?
Candace leaned in and softly spoke.
JB loosely held her hand across the seat divider, rubbing his thumb over his new bride’s knuckles, and sighed in gratitude for her. He knew she both observed him and listened. But telling it like he needed to—as he lived it—would require shutting off the world by closing his eyes. So he did. I’ll start from the beginning, my love. It’s all about the fifty-two weeks that changed my life. My longest year. But things began to unravel a while before then, on Christmas Eve. Months of turmoil, followed by fifty-two weeks of watching God do the improbable.
He shook his head. He could see everything again, in his mind’s eye, like a replay.…
Jabez!
Poppa called me, but the overwhelming sound of crashing objects blasting through my ears and stemming from the bedroom area spelled trouble. I sought where to hide in the cramped living room. Barely big enough for our couch and small TV, it left little room for maneuver. I scrambled past the wall separating the kitchen from the living room and stumbled forward beyond the hanging sole family photo we ever took—I was ten.
I glanced at the big TV set on a brown, three-legged stand opposite where he usually sat to watch football while drinking and cursing. Good spot. It was large enough to hide behind, so I made a dash for it—before it was too late.
Jabez! Where’s your momma?!
Poppa’s voice raged again, and more crashing followed close to the dining area. You slick…
The garble coming from his throat made it hard to tell whether he was drunk or high.
Blood pounded in my ears. It was going to be a bad, bad night—for me and for Momma. I squeezed myself into a tight corner sandwiched between the TV box and the convergence of two walls behind it. Stepping on a tweezers wrapper from the last time I hid there and shrinking at the noise it made, I shuffled it aside with one foot and closed my eyes tight. Maybe he won’t find me. Maybe things won’t get bad. Yet I was unable to keep the sounds of his heavy, angered breathing from reaching my ears as his feet pounded nearer.
I was surely safe. I assured myself. This was my perfect hiding spot. He’d never found me here. I curled my arms around myself, shut my eyes tightly,
