NOTE
As a board-certified ob-gyn, I have experienced the anguished cries of birthing mothers and babies, as well as the confounding symptoms originating from the complex female reproductive system. However, it wasn't until I began to be active on social media that I discovered that throngs of women had been yelling loudly for help, especially women in perimenopause or menopause. They felt isolated and distressed by a collection of disruptive symptoms.
The author's personal experience with menopause allowed her to relate not just through empathy but also through her own personal experience. She had to stop taking birth control pills for contraception and control her polycystic ovarian syndrome, knowing menopause was coming soon. Around the same time, her brother, Bob, became terminally ill, and she forgot her own. She tried melatonin, meditation, and proper sleep hygiene, but nothing worked.
Eventually, she decided to start hormone therapy, which led to a vicious circle of lethargy and unhealthiness. She was fortunate to have the ability to self-diagnose and self-treat, and had access to research and medical insight that helped her create a comprehensive approach to her care, including nutritional strategies, exercise, and stress reduction techniques.
The Galveston Diet program, offered through her clinic in Galveston, Texas, and later in a book, has grown to over three and one-half million followers across her channels. The response to the program was overwhelming, and the author is proud of the program and its impact on many women.
The New Menopause is a book that aims to educate and empower women to care for themselves or help others care more deeply for them as they experience and deal with these changes. It provides an opportunity for a fresh start in how women experience perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause, and how they approach their well-being during these stages of life.
PART ONE
The Story of Menopausal Medicine
It’s Not All in Your Head
The study published in the Journal of Women's Health in 2023 revealed that many women in perimenopause or menopause receive substandard care and weak support from their healthcare providers. Many feel invalidated or have not been provided with help or information to understand the cause of their symptoms. This lack of support can have major medical consequences, as it can lead to issues like chronic cough, tinnitus, and benign position vertigo. Estrogen, a hormone key to reproductive capabilities, is responsible for many other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and type 2 diabetes.
Estrogen replacement and aging can prolong life, with a study revealing that a woman starting estrogen at fifty can expect to live up to two years longer than those who do not. Additionally, a 20 to 50 percent decrease in dying
