Learn to Crochet Gansey Dishcloths - Annie's
Introduction
By Britt Schmiesing
What Is Gansey Crochet?
Gansey crochet is based on textures normally found in knit gansey sweaters worn by fishermen for hundreds of years. These knit sweaters originated on the Island of Guernsey and were filled with tight textures that were designed to keep the fishermen warm and dry.
Gansey crochet projects tend to be highly textured and feature combinations of 3-D stitching and flattering traditional stitches. The 3-D textured stitching is just perfect for scrubbing dishes! These dishcloths are also a great way to swatch some fun textures that could be used in other future projects you might have in mind. Practicing the techniques and stitches in these dishcloths willl prepare you for using the stitches in larger projects while also producing something beautiful and functional.
The Projects
In this book, we have created some unique and well-textured dishcloths based on some of our most popular designs: the Cornwall Gansey Afghan by Margret Willson, the Special Stitches Sampler, an original by Annie, and the Rowany Gansey Poncho by Tammy Hildebrand. These designs are available at AnniesCraftStore.com.
Each dishcloth in this book has photos of what each row of the repeat should look like when completed, QR codes for how-to videos of some of the special stitches and stitch diagrams. If you are new to stitch diagrams, the next section will walk you through how to read them. They are a great visual and will help to make sure you are on the right track while working on each dishcloth. Read through the article and then dive right into creating some truly unique and useful gansey projects.
How to Read Stitch Diagrams
By Karen Manthey
Prevent stitching errors, check your work and expand your pattern-reading skills. Compare your swatches to their accompanying stitch diagrams as a checks and balances system for more perfect projects.
This book uses crochet stitch diagrams. For those of you who are not familiar with these tools of crochet, diagrams provide a pictorial representation of stitch patterns. Diagrams can help you to follow a complicated pattern and also help you to visualize the finished design. Made up of international crochet symbols first developed in Japan, crochet diagrams can be read by anyone in any language.
Although diagrams may appear complicated at first glance, once you have learned to decipher the symbols,
