The Art of Cozy - Maarja Peebo
About the author
Hi everyone, it's Maarja here, and I am so excited to finally introduce my latest book, The Art of Cozy: A Guide to Embracing Hygge for a Happier Life.
As a stay-at-home mom of three little girls, I know firsthand how hectic and stressful life can get. But that's where hygge comes in. This philosophy, rooted in Danish culture, is all about creating a warm, cozy atmosphere that promotes relaxation and a sense of well-being. And let me tell you, it's a game-changer.
As a child, I was always drawn to cozy spaces and activities that made me feel happy and content. And as I got older, I realized that this instinct was more than just a preference - it was a way of life. So I dove headfirst into the world of hygge, studying its principles and experimenting with ways to infuse this lifestyle into my daily routine.
Over time, I became a bit of a hygge expert, and that's when I decided to write The Art of Cozy.
In this book, I share my favorite tips and tricks for creating a hygge-filled life, from simple joys like cuddling up with a good book to bigger endeavors like hosting a dinner party with friends. I firmly believe that anyone can incorporate hygge into their lives, regardless of their lifestyle or budget.
But more than just practical advice, The Art of Cozy
is also a celebration of the small moments that bring us joy. It's about finding pleasure in the everyday, whether that's savoring a warm cup of tea or admiring the beauty of nature. Through my book, I hope to inspire readers to slow down, appreciate the present moment, and create a life that is full of warmth, comfort, and happiness.
When I'm not writing or practicing hygge, you can find me enjoying the great outdoors with my family, trying out new baking recipes in the kitchen, or snuggled up on the couch with a cozy blanket and a good movie. And let me tell you, there's nothing quite like a hygge-approved movie night.
So whether you're a seasoned hygge enthusiast or just dipping your toes into the world of coziness, I invite you to join me on this journey. Let's embrace the joy and comfort that hygge can bring, and create a life that is truly worth savoring.
INTRODUCTION
In a world that values hustle, ambition, and constant productivity, it's easy to forget the importance of slowing down and finding comfort in the simple things in life. This is where hygge comes in. Hygge (pronounced hoo-gah) is a Danish word that roughly translates to the feeling of coziness and contentment that comes from enjoying life's simple pleasures. It's about creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere that promotes relaxation and comfort, and finding joy in the present moment.
But where did this idea come from? To understand the history of hygge, we need to go back a few centuries.
The first known use of the word hygge was in the 18th century. It comes from the Norwegian word hyggeleg
, which means a state of well-being and contentment. The Danes adopted this word and made it their own, with their own interpretation and spin on what it means to be hyggelig
.
Hygge became increasingly popular in Denmark in the 19th century, where the harsh winter months made the need for comfort and warmth all the more necessary. During this time, Denmark was a predominantly agricultural country, and the winters were long and cold. Families would gather around the fireplace, drinking hot cocoa and telling stories to pass the time.
As Denmark became more industrialized, the concept of hygge evolved. The term was no longer just about physical comfort and warmth; it became a way of life. Danes would focus on creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere in their homes, often using candles and warm lighting to enhance the ambiance. They would place a great emphasis on spending quality time with loved ones, whether it was over a meal or simply snuggled up together on the couch.
Hygge continued to be an integral part of Danish culture throughout the 20th century, but it was not until the early 2000s that it started to spread beyond Denmark's borders. The idea of hygge resonated with people around the world, who were looking to create more meaningful connections with friends and family and find comfort in the small things.
Today, hygge is more popular than ever, and books have been written about it; cafes, restaurants, and home decor stores are all embracing the hygge vibe. While it may have started as a way to survive harsh Danish winters, hygge is now a way of life and a philosophy that is embraced by people all over the world. It continues to evolve and adapt to meet the needs of modern life, but the essence of hygge remains the same: creating a warm, welcoming, and comfortable space that fosters connection, contentment, and happiness.
Hygge has become a popular concept for good reason. It offers a way to combat stress, anxiety, and the constant drive to do more, be more, and achieve more. By practicing hygge, we can learn to appreciate the small things in life, such as spending time with loved ones, enjoying a warm cup of tea, or simply curling up with a good book.
In this book, we will explore the world of hygge and how it can transform our lives. We'll learn about the key elements of hygge, how to create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere, and how to incorporate hygge into various areas of our lives, such as home, relationships, and travel. So, sit back, relax, and let's dive into the world of hygge.
