Chapter 1
How to Develop a Positive Attitude and the Basics of Small Talk
Meeting new people and starting a formal conversation may seem strange and unnecessary at times unless you are meeting for official purposes. When developing a topic of conversation with new people, however, it is critical, to begin with, small talk, which builds up a conversation. There are numerous topics from which to choose, and then develop a meaningful discussion from other relevant topics. Small talks are defined as informal conversations or dialogues that do not always cover the functional or transactional topic. As a result, it is referred to as a social skill because it allows people to freely communicate with others, including strangers.
The small talk became a phenomenon in 1923 when Bronislaw Malinowski studied it and described it as a social skill and a type of social communication. Small discussions can also be used as space fillers to avoid silence during conversations, in addition to acting as a type of conversation opener. Others use small talk to limit rejections associated with the end of a particular topic. Some discussions have limited topics to cover; as a result, small talk is required to promote conversations between different people, including family members, friends, co-workers, and new people. According to researchers, the nature of the relationship between the two parties involved in the conversation may be the most important factor in small talk.
Small talk patterns have been linked to chances when meeting strangers and establishing topics that are typically agreed upon by the other person. It could be a question, an opinion, or a statement that requires a response. When considering politeness, the person responds with a short and substantial answer. In this case, you can either engage further in the topic or change the subject immediately after consideration for the following topic small talks are typically brief and serve as tools for maintaining a conversation in the absence of a meaningful discussion. A study suggests that because women are more collaborative among themselves, they can engage in different small talks more frequently than men due to their involvement in conversations.
Small Talk Topics for a More Friendly Conversation
Introducing Yourself
Meeting new people, particularly those you admire can be accomplished through the use of small talk, which promotes the development of a significant conversation. That is, you can approach and introduce yourself to someone with whom you have never previously interacted. You can include some details about how you first saw the individual or what you do during the introduction. Hello Angel, we always have coffee at the same place and time, but we've never spoken.
My name is [Your name].
General Subjects
There are several small talk topics from which to choose and engage to develop a conversation. You can discuss the weather, sports, or recent news stories that have made headlines.
Such universal topics are important, especially for groups, because some people may be unaware of the topic, but one or more may be. Some people may not be sports or news fans, but you can try to make it more general to appeal to their interests. Don't get too deep into topics, making others feel excluded, but make it more interactive.
Discuss the Day
This is one of the small talks you can use when you don't know where to begin or how to break the silence. When it comes to depending on which option you select, the day could be about your day or their day. Even those who are having a bad day can start a conversation by making it more positive. However, avoid engaging in personal matters that may feel offensive or like an invasion of privacy. Make it enjoyable, especially when the other person freely participates in the conversation.
Immediate surroundings
Another excellent small talk topic can be generated by observing what is around you and your partner. That is, you can quickly look around and comment on something that piques your interest. Some people may choose to compliment their partners on how they look, anything nice, or something they both have in common. This indicates that you will not be at a loss for words because your partner will undoubtedly understand what you are saying. Everyone enjoys a good compliment, especially when it is directed at their appearance. I love your dress today; it pulls your outfit together,
for example.
Interests
People with similar interests usually have something in common that brings them together, so it's important to develop small talk. In other words, it implies that you have a topic to discuss despite the absence of a specific topic. The interest could be anything from a mutual friend to a hobby that you both enjoy and participate in regularly. However, it is uncommon to ask someone about their hobbies because it sounds unnatural and awkward. Instead, ask based on observations that easily drive the point of what they enjoy doing. I noticed you have a New York Giants logo,
for example. Do you enjoy American football?
Approach and Mindset
Having a reason for small talk with people consists of developing self-confidence, which allows you to develop an exciting personality as well as interactive discussion Furthermore, it determines the progression of your interaction because inappropriate small talk indicates one answer response and the end of the discussion. Some people
