Knight Sir Louis and the Dragon of Doooooom! - The Brothers McLeod
Oo yes. Let’s start this book with a map. Come closer.
Closer.
No, not that close. Back up a bit.
Ah yes! It’s a map of that famous, feared land . . . the Desolation of Doooooom. Not to be confused with Doo’oom which is a lovely little village by the sea. They have a nice tea room with the best cakes ever.
No, the Desolation of Doooooom doesn’t have any tea rooms or cakes because it’s a land inhabited by dragons. Doooooom Dragons are well known for being big, bad-tempered and for breathing blue fire. If a tea room did open in the Desolation of Doooooom, say at 8am in the morning, then it would be without a roof by 9am, the cakes set on fire by 10am, and all the bakers eaten by lunchtime.
Doooooom is not a pretty country. It’s not the sort of place you’d find in a holiday brochure. Not unless you like taking your holidays inside a volcano. Most of it has been set on fire (several times) so that it’s a dry, dusty place with hardly any trees or wildlife. The only other things that can survive there do so by living underground (like the burrowing three-humped camels).
So, you’re probably thinking that these Doooooom dragons must be a terrible threat to their neighbours in the surrounding kingdoms?
Fortunately, most Doooooom dragons are lazy and don’t like long distance travel. They also try not to attract the attention of brave knights. Why? Because brave knights like daring adventures and turning dragon heads into wall ornaments.
So, usually the dragons just stay within the borders of Doooooom.
But . . .
. . . things have changed. Thanks to one dragon.
Now, there are lots of different kinds of dragon in Doooooom.
I’m not going to list them all. This isn’t a biology textbook you know. All you need to know is that bi-dragons can be some of the most foul-tempered and they have two heads. A lot of the time the two heads don’t like each other very much. This usually results in a very fiery argument and a very charred ex-dragon. But sometimes they get along. Those are the really dangerous ones. Like Borax.
This is Borax. I wouldn’t get too close if I were you. This illustration is dangerous.
Borax’s two heads have different names: Yargl Borax is on the left there. He’s cruel, spiteful and CUNNING. Scaba Borax is on the right. She’s quick-tempered, mean and CUNNING.
Borax started out life as an egg. They were just one of seven eggs. They were the smallest egg. Even before Borax was born they could hear their dragon parents who would mock Borax’s egg.
Stuff like that.
Maybe Yargl and Scaba could have turned out to be lovely and considerate if they’d been treated with kindness. We’ll never know. Because even before they were born they were CUNNING. They put their heads together and came up with a plan. They decided to hatch out before the other eggs.
They waited until their parents had gone off to feed. Then they stretched and pushed and wriggled until they hatched themselves. Once they were out, they munched up all the other eggs. Then they dragged the nest over a big hole, stuck the egg shells back in the nest and waited for their parents to return.
When their parents came home and sat back on the nest . . . it fell into the hole taking their unfortunate parents with it. They were never seen again.
Yargl and Scaba never looked back.
Meanies.
Okay. Fair enough. Let’s quickly check in on Louis.
As you can see, Louis is still getting ready for this book. Right now, he’s cooking breakfast. Looks like eggs, beans and buttery crumpets with a glass of milk. Mmm.
Now, let’s head over to Castle Round-the-Twist in the kingdom of Klaptrap.
This very twisty castle is home to Queen Incredulous. Here are some of the things she believes:
Queen Incredulous isn’t the sort of queen to be distracted by things like facts or information. Once she’s decided something is true, then nothing can change her mind. That’s why she is very unhappy with her champion, Knight Sir Daisy.
Knight Sir Daisy is a brave, fearless knight. Since becoming the champion last year at the age of eleven, she hasn’t really had the chance to fight dire dragons, or wayward wizards or ignoble knights.
She’s been fighting for the truth! Here’s a secret lecture she gave just last week to the Castle Round-the-Twist Union of Sciencey Thoughts and Ideas (or CRUSTI for short).
Hello everyone. Thanks for coming. Here’s what I’ve discovered this week.
I went and had a look at the sea.
I know it’s forbidden and the queen doesn’t think it’s there but . . .
. . . I decided to check it out.
Well. It turns out it IS there.
And it is both fun and dangerous depending on what you do with it.
I’ve also discovered . . .
Toast is hot bread.
Owls are birds.
Thirty-five is a bigger number than thirty-four.
Mountains are made of rocks.
