1. A New Creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
(2 Corinthians 5:17)
Read: John 3:1-8; Romans 6:1-14; Ephesians 4:22-24; Colossians 3:3-11; 1 Peter 1:3.
When we become a Christian, the Bible tells us that we become a new person. I like the New Living Translation which says those who become Christians become new persons. They are not the same any more, for the old life is gone. A new life has begun!
(2 Cor. 5:17) If you have truly given your life to Jesus, you have been born again and you have started a whole new life!
When you prayed to Jesus, asking him to forgive your sins and cleanse you, He came to live inside of you by the Holy Spirit. The above verse in the second letter to the Corinthians talks about us being in Christ
. Yes, Jesus lives on the inside of us but our lives are also hidden with Christ in God
(Colossians 3:3). In other words, because Jesus bore the punishment for our sins, when we come to the Father He no longer sees our sin-stained life. Instead we are clothed with the righteousness of Jesus—God sees Jesus and Jesus' holiness when He looks at us!
Because Jesus lives in you and you have given your life to Him, your heart has changed. You no longer want to sin—instead you want to live to please God. Romans chapter 6 describes this conversion as being like a death and resurrection. When you gave your life to Jesus it is as though you died with Him on the cross. However, Jesus came to life again after three days, to the glory of God. We too experience a new birth and our new life is also to be lived for God's glory.
Water baptism is so important because it is an outward symbol of this spiritual metamorphosis—it symbolises our death and resurrection in Jesus Christ. As we go down into the water we leave our old life behind and we come up a new and cleansed person. Not only that but when we died with Christ we were actually set free from sin (Romans 6:7). We no longer have to sin—we now have the power to live a transformed life, one which is pleasing to God.
This transformation is on the one hand immediate, but it is also a lifelong process. The Bible uses the word sanctification
, which means set apart
or holy
. When we become a Christian, we are set apart
from the world. We are also made holy in that Jesus has forgiven and cleansed us of our sins. However, we are not sinless. We will continue to make mistakes, do and say wrong things, have wrong or bad attitudes. The Christian life is like a walk, where we learn and change along the way. One day, when we go to heaven to be with God forever, we will be made perfect but until then we are being transformed daily so that we gradually become more
