Violet – Book 1
Nahla
I’ve got new drama like right now! My name is Nahla Brooks, and my life is literally a big drama. Seriously, what does one expect out of a fifteen-year old girl, who has the rottenest little brother and a million enemies? Okay, maybe that last part was a little overexaggerated.
STILL.
I have enemies, and did I mention my brother is one of them? Yeah. If he could, he would lock me up, tell everyone a lie about it, and then cut certain parts of my dead body out to profit from it. Okay, maybe that was overexaggerated, too. Anyway, as I already said, I have a new drama. My school just started a group that I completely dig! I’m not going to go into much detail about the whole thing right now. Why? I don’t know much about it.
That’s why I’m going to ask Principal Wood all about it. My parents already know that I want to join, or at least I hope so. They didn’t look like they were paying attention to me while I was telling them about it last night. They were watching a movie, and it’s not like I was being loud and open about it either.
But it’s okay.
It’s okay because I am going to get it all cleared up today, so I can find out what this group is about. Who knows, I might change my mind.
It’s early in the morning, probably 5:30, and I am sipping a juice box and watching a YouTube video. I believe in me time
and I have it a lot. No matter what happens in my day, I always find a moment for a little me time
. Some minutes ago, I woke up with a strong urge to use the restroom, and I thought that it would be a good time to get some me time
while everyone is still asleep. I managed to sneak out of my room, use the bathroom, grab a drink, and hurry back to my room without anyone waking up. My parents sleep together in the back of the house, and my brother sleeps across from me in his own room.
Mom is a cool type of person and she doesn’t get super mad over things, while my Dad is more serious and formal. Even though he’s a policeman, he has always been strict. Since I know my parents very well, I don’t think they would mind me drinking in my room.
On the other hand, I know someone who would mind. Andre! My brother, Andre, has a problem with everything I do, and he is not afraid to report to our parents or to sabotage me! That’s not a lie, my brother is just that cruel. And even that may be an understatement.
So, I’m just minding my own beeswax, when I hear the knob on my door turn and my door opens slowly. I see a short shadow in the doorway.
Nahla? I knew you were up. I heard the refrigerator door open AND close.
said my annoying little brother.
I rolled my eyes. Yeah, I’m awake. Now could you close the door and go back to bed? I’m having ‘me time’.
Nope. You’re not supposed to be awake.
He said, taking a few steps into my room.
Um. . . Mom and Dad would be fine with this. Just go back to bed, AJ.
I sighed.
He walked in silently and climbed onto my bed. I was a little startled. Who did he think he was? I waved him away, but he stuck around like a gnat and wouldn’t back off.
What are you watching anyway?
he asked as he reached eagerly for my computer.
AJ!
I whisper-shouted while waving him like a gnat.
He pinched me and snatched my computer away from me as quick as lightning. He took one look at my computer and laughed. I shushed him and then immediately fell into a shy stillness.
He turned to me. Are you watching Darien Miller? That boy you were rambling about the other week? How’d you even know he had a YouTube channel? You’re a stalker. Stalker! Stalker! Stalker!
I wanted to slap his face even though I couldn’t see his face in the dark. That’s a good thing though. Because if I knew where his face was, I would’ve slapped him!
So, what if I’m watching him? And I’m not a stalker! Darien is always telling people to subscribe to his channel at school. I was too stupid to talk to him, so I decided to go on his YouTube channel to learn more about him. This is completely innocent.
I whispered angrily.
Yeah? Well, I don’t think so. Why is this video in slow motion then?
I stammered, I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.
AJ nodded, Uh, yes you do.
He pressed play on the video, which showed Darien walking up his driveway. Darien’s walk is so cute, so I couldn’t help putting the video in slow motion! Sure enough, AJ found me out, but I wasn’t going to let him have that satisfaction.
I... uh… was trying to see the bird over in the corner of the screen. I wanted to see it’s movement in slow motion.
I lied.
AJ yelled, Nope! Liar! Liar! Liar!
Shut up, Andre!
I screamed accidentally.
Gosh! Is it okay to want to ship your little brother back into your mother, so that he can start his life cycle the RIGHT way?
What’s going on?
My mom said as she walked/stumbled into my room.
Andre and I started talking at the same time, desperately trying to explain our side of the story. Mom took a rag out of her pocket and tossed it at us.
Andre? What are you doing in Nahla’s room? This is a GIRL’S room!
She demanded.
Andre did a fake worried voice, "Mom, I’m seriously innocent. I heard the refrigerator door open, so I got up to see if Nahla was up. When I went into her room
