The Casebook of Sixy

About this ebook
When Sixy saw a stranger in the school map room, he locked the door and ran for the headmaster. Then we found out who the stranger was.... A Circular Rossington tells the whole gruesome story. In 471895, Betrayed by a Pun and Red for Go, I report three more of Sixy’s cases.

I retired (early) and started a new career as a writer. I wrote short stories and articles. Some were published; some won prizes; some sank without trace.Having heard my stories, two friends suggested I should write for children. I’d never thought of that, although I’d spent my first career communicating with young people – as a Chemistry teacher, and running clubs for badminton, chess, table tennis and hillwalking.I tried writing for young people – and I loved it. It became my main occupation. I sent samples to publishers. One asked to see a complete story. In excitement, I sent it off. Then nothing. After four months, I rang, and was told the manuscript was being considered: I would be notified. Then more nothing. Now, after eight years, I no longer rush to the door when the letter box rattles. But I kept writing the stories because I enjoyed it so much. Until, in late 2013, I learned I could publish my stories and games as e-books. Since then, I’ve been polishing and issuing some of them. I hope everyone enjoys reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.Check out the series:C: Charades – party game – a new twist to the traditional game.D: Diagags – party game – gags written as plays for two people.M: My Story – novels – classical stories, told by the heroes.O: One-Offs – party game – guess the titles, not quite the classical ones.P: Pop Tales – short stories – inspired by 60s and 70s hit songs.Q: Quote-Outs – word games – can you deduce the missing words?S: Inside Story – novels – a boy’s adventures inside classical stories.T: Troubleshooters – novels – space adventures for young people.

A CIRCULAR ROSSINGTON
The trouble started in Science last period yesterday afternoon. Winkie gave us iodine solution. He thought we were going to use it to test for starch. But Sixy tore a bit from the back page of his jotter, squeezed it between his fingers, and dipped it in the iodine solution. He held it up, inspecting it as it dripped on the bench.
I asked him, What are you doing?
A scientific test,
he said. Can you see anything?
Just a bit of soggy yellow paper. It hasn’t got starch in it.
I don’t care about starch. Listen, BB, it’s….
Gerald, what are you doing?
Winkie was beside us, repeating my question in a more disapproving voice.
I’m testing the paper for fingerprints,
said Sixy. Haven’t you heard of the iodine test?
I might’ve guessed. Sixy fancies himself as a detective. No matter what I say, and no matter how much trouble it gets him in, he won’t give it up.
Lucky for him, Winkie’s a good lad. He said, Yes, Gerald. I have heard of the iodine test, but that’s not how it’s done.
I know that’s not how it’s usually done, but I hoped it might work.
No, Gerald. If you care to wait behind at the end of the period, I’ll explain it to you.
Would you, sir? Thank you!
So, when the rest of the class escaped at 3.45, Sixy waited behind and, of course, so did I. He’s a pest at times but he’s my mate, and we walk home together.
Winkie explained it’s not iodine solution they use for testing fingerprints; it’s iodine vapour. You put the thing in a sealed bottle with a tiny black crystal of iodine. It gives off a vapour which shows up the fingerprints. Of course, Sixy was desperate to try it, so we put our fingerprints on a bit of tile and left it in a stoppered jar with the iodine.
That took about twenty minutes, so the school was weirdly quiet as we went through the empty corridors on our way out. We passed the map room, a small, windowless room with shelves where the geography department keep their maps and stuff. I suppose I noticed the door was half-open, and the light was on, but Sixy rushed to the door and pulled it shut. The key was in the lock, and I heard the click as he turned it.
Sixy!
I said. What are you doing?
Get help!
He dashed away.
The map room door handle rattled. Somebody was in there. But I had to stick with Sixy. I started after him, followed by angry shouts from the map room.
As we ran along the empty corridors, I slowly caught up on Sixy, but I was still a few steps behind him when he sprinted round one corner, and I heard an,
