- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Jenna Blum writes from the heart in this touching novel about the turbulent relationship between a set of twins...one of whom is bipolar.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5"Twindar," bipolar, secrets, family life, manslaughter....Birthdays and phones...two things Karena likes to forget about, but her birthday and the phone ringing off the hook with bad news both happen on the same day.The news did help in other ways, though. Karena was learning about what stormchasers do, and she was closer to finding her twin brother who she hadn't seen for twenty years since he too is a stormchaser.Karena is invited, or rather she invites herself, on a stormchasing tour in the role of newspaper woman, which she is. She meets people who knew her brother, but she didn't get good news about him. The book mainly talks about chasing storms and finding Karena's brother. It also flashes back to Charles and Karena's childhood describing what their life was like as twins and what the life was like with their "absent" parents. Love of course comes into the picture as well...brotherly and sisterly love as well as romantic love.It wasn't bad, kept your interest....4/5.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5After reading her amazing debut novel, Those Who Save Us, I was eagerly anticipating this book; however, for me, it simply didn't work on several levels. I grew up in the midwest, so I well remember the havoc that tornadoes can cause. That said, I found there was way too much meterological information to sustain my interest for seemingly interminable passages. The main characters, a bi-polar, stormchasing man and his twin sister, never captured my interest. I think that Jenna Blum is an extraordinarly talented author who perhaps should have taken more time to write this second novel. Based on her first book, I will read whatever she writes, but I did find this one disappointing.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I liked the book better once part two began. In the end, I was still indifferent. As a Psychology student, the topic of bipolar disorder is very interesting. However, throughout the book I felt a dislike towards each of the characters. Each seemed to overreact to small things. Knowing someone with bipolar disorder should have the opposite effect. When things can change on a dime, each little action matters less. The way that Wiebke reacted to the motorcycle incident made me think that it was going to have been his close friend or relative that they had actually killed. He seemed so traumatized by the event that he hadn't even begun to understand. They had known each other a few weeks at most, no one in their right mind would have told them the biggest secret of their life this early.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Storm chasing aspect is interesting, so-so for the rest.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I enjoyed learning about Stormchasers and getting a glimpse into the life of someone with Bipolar disease. This was a good story and written well, my issue is it was just a story..... it wasn't exactly my cup of tea. I expected more highs and lows with the rush of the storms and some emotional touching dramatic times with siblings dealing with Bipolar but it never got intense and I needed that.Another style issue I had is the Chapter flow. We started in present for Part 1 then into the past with the siblings then back to the present when the siblings reunited. This is not a style I like because it ruins the flow for me, I wanted more present and had to wait but then wasn't really interested in the past. I would have appreciated glimpses of the past throughout the story more than this style. What I did love, the characters. Karena was a great character, I enjoyed her, felt she was real and the twindar feelings for her twin brother Charles was totally believable and wonderful. The man she met, Kevin, was also a good feeling character and liked them together. Something about Charles was missing for me, maybe I just wanted to feel and understand the Bipolar part more.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I tend to purchase books because of the cover, this one drew me. I have a gazillion books to read, but wanted to inject this book before going back to the other stack of books. I have to say, I was disappointed. Karena's dealing with her brothers bipolar issues was very touching for me, as I have a friend who gets up every day to face this. I was well into the book and everyone is chasing storms and all at once they are not and we get into another pace. These changing tempo's with no preparation were to me off putting. I just finished and will pass it on. Hopefully the next book I read grabs me and takes me somewhere....
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is the first book I read by Jenna Blum, and I really enjoyed it. Stormchasing has always fascinated me, and this book and the detail about stormchasing interwoven with the relationship between the twins, Karena and Charles, really held my interest.
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5The Stormchasers By Jenna Blum Karena is a writer in Minnesota. She is a bright smart 30 ish independent woman recently divorced. Karena has not seen or heard from her twin brother Charles in 20 years. They were very close as children in spite of the fact that Charles exhibited bipolar disease at a young age and Karena continually took care of him and deeply loved him despite his erratic and sometimes violent behavior. Karena is set on finding Charles and helping him manage his mental issues. Charles's obsession is stormchasing and chasing tornado's in this part of the country is an interesting hobby if not lifestyle. This story is unique regarding the twin relationship and that of stormchasing (think movie Twister). The writing starts out very strong but unfortunately falters with a cliched romance and a rush to the end finale. It was an okay and easy read but nothing like the authors first novel Those Who Save Us.
