About this audiobook

The #1 New York Times bestseller and “compulsive page-turner” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution) about a reluctant clairvoyant man who must weigh his options when he suddenly sees the terrible future awaiting mankind—from master storyteller Stephen King.

When Johnny Smith was six years old, head trauma caused by a bad ice-skating accident left him with a nasty bruise on his forehead and, from time to time, those hunches…infrequent but accurate snippets of things to come. But it isn’t until Johnny’s a grown man—now having survived a horrifying auto injury that plunged him into a coma lasting four-and-a-half years—that his special abilities really push to the fore. Johnny Smith comes back from the void with an extraordinary gift that becomes his life’s curse…presenting visions of what was and what will be for the innocent and guilty alike. But when he encounters a ruthlessly ambitious and amoral man who promises a terrifying fate for all humanity, Johnny must find a way to prevent a harrowing predestination from becoming reality.

This was the very first Stephen King book I ever read (at age 12, btw), and I'm surprised I never re-read it until now. It's the one that got me hooked on King- - and I mean HOOKED. Yet, I never revisited this one....
I saw that it was recently released inn audio, with James Franco reading it. I was convinced: time tho luck this baby up again! So glad I did! It's even better than I had remembered, plus Franco brings such richness to the story with his reading of it! I highly recommend this book to you, even (especially?) if you're not a King fan.... it's different from his usual fare.

I was concerned that this would be a bloody horror, but no, just a well written novel, in fact I consider it among King's best work. The one I have is the 45th anniversary edition, I doubt that it is significantly different that the first edition.

book was ok, but james franco put out the worst “professional” narration i ever heard. he was mumbling half the time and whispering the rest of the time, he sounds like he was on heavy painkillers the whole time

This was one of my favorite Stephen King books. The character of Johnny Smith is complex and interesting. His relationships to the other characters creates a tender dynamic in contrast with the intense situations he encounters.

Riveting from start to finish. Stephen King at his best prose. The characters are endearing, real and unahakingly themselves. Lovely ending. Would re-rear, recommend as a must-read.

I’d have given 4.5 stars if I could’ve! And maybe all 5 is more accurate…I’m spoiled by Steven King’s always-high quality and therefore score his work on a separate scale, I think. This captivated me throughout. I highly recommend.

This is a book I've always been aware of, but never really thought much about until now. After the political turmoil we recently went through and seeing this book come back to the surface due to certain similarities, I had to see what it was about and I'm glad I did. I really enjoyed the story and the narration. Highly recommend.

This was an excellent read. I’m not sure if it was due to loosing two family members die from COVID two years ago or not but this book hit me hard. It will make you think about mortality, family, life choices, and what might have been. It shows how people keep moving forward as best they can despite life not always going as hoped or planned. You will not feel good reading this book or what is happening to the characters in this book but it might help you to deal with things that have or are happening in your life right now. This by far has been my favorite King book.

Amazing an interesting story! Everything from love to the supernatural. Somehow Steven King made the supernatural so believable one couldn’t believe it doesn’t exist. As usual his writing is superb. James Franco didn’t excellent job Narrating. Who knew he was as Talented as he is handsome. What a story?

I think this is my new favorite Stephen King. Well read by Franco. King's threading of the characters with a touch of mystery and only a little violence made for an amazing audiobook. I hung onto every word.

This book had me emotional at the end. It's definitely pretty different from a lot of his books, but at the same time feels classic King. This is a long story about a nice guy named Johnny, and it goes in about 100 different directions to all meet back up at the end. It's a great read!
