This important story about the history of the south and evils of what men are capable of against other men was well written. It was engaging all the way through. It was heartbreaking and hard to listen to in some parts. But it also showed that human kindness was possible even after so much personal loss. I will look for more books from this author

Entertaining enough, but impossible to believe. Very unrealistic main character.

Throughout this very long book, I was often frustrated by feeling left out of the thoughts and feelings of the main character. There was a sense of distance between the reader and the protagonist. I guess the book wore me down though, because about 2/3 of the way through. I really wanted to know how everybody's lives turned out.

Absolutely one of the best novels I’ve read in a long time. It weaves a wonderful plot together with the historical facts of that time period and place in South Carolina. I was stunned to learn that this was a first time author. Her writing brings vivid life to her strong characters and empowers them even though they themselves would have little real power in the society of that time. Please read this gripping story set in the Civil War era.

I’m always listening to several audiobooks, and this book was spectacular!!

I am hard to please, and I loved this book from the moment I heard the first word. Each reader brought wonderful life and tone to their character and I’m so grateful I found it.

I was incredibly sad when it ended five minutes ago and I can’t wait to tell my friends about how engrossing it is.

Kudos and more kudos to the author. It shows that she took time, love and patience to write this.

As a non-fiction author myself, I know the commitment it is to sit down and write some thing and then hope people like it.

Wonderful book! It could easily be made into a movie. The Narrator did an amazing job of doing southern accents & switching back and forth from each character. It’s a great storyline & the quintessential southern civil war novel.

So good. I’m having major post-book blues. Can’t believe it’s this author’s first book. Outstanding. 10/10 Riveting story with characters you just want to latch on to and never ever let go of. I literally live in the heart of where this book is set; the research and historical accuracy is impeccable. To note, I did not know the setting upon picking it out to read—actually picked it bc it’s one of the few books on Scribd with 5 full-star rating. Here’s another one. Can’t wait to read more from this author.

This is one of the best historical fiction novels I have read. I was captivated-staying up late to find out what happened to Polly, Ben, Ona, and the awful John Stone. I sincerely hope this is the first of many novels by this author as I enjoyed this novel so very much.

A long and engaging story beginning to end. Well written and not at all shy about discussing the human failings of all characters.

It took me awhile to become invested in the main character Polly, chapter 13 to be exact, 1/3 of the 600 page book. At the beginning she was pretty one dimensional, sweet but sheltered and I kept reading mostly to see Polly grow to see how naïve she was, once she began to have inner conflict I became more interested. How easily manipulated she was became frustrating but than again that's good writing to have the reader willing to continue reading waiting for character and plot development but after awhile her lack of resolve became tedious, it would flare for a moment and than she would forget about the atrocities that bothered her for a pretty husband, after the 5th or 6th time of this the pattern was monotonous. Because of how drawn out the beginning was the plot reveal was a little anticlimactic but I'm glad I stuck it out, my favorite development was of Tom Roper.

I don’t usually read civil war books because they break my heart, but something about this one grabbed me from just the description. Touching from the very beginning and kept me going back and forth between wanting to find out what happened and never wanting the story to end. Despite the moments of crying, totally worth the time spent with these inspiring people.
