About this audiobook

In her first year of medical school, Abby West’s goals for the future were derailed by an unexpected pregnancy. Reluctantly, she discarded her dream of becoming a physician in favor of being a wife to one.

Nineteen years later, Abby discovers her powerful, well-connected husband has been keeping a secret—an eight-year-old son from an old affair. Devastated by the betrayal, she flees to her grandmother’s hometown on the Amalfi coast.

There, Abby meets Daniel Quinn, a former American soldier turned photographer. As she travels across Europe with him, she begins to imagine a new life, one without a controlling and unfaithful husband.

Empowered by a newfound sense of freedom and courage, Abby returns to St. Augustine to settle things with her husband. But nothing goes as planned, and what awaits may very well destroy her.

It was ok. A bit predictable and not the best writing. The audio is a bit too much like someone reading to me. It may be a better experience to skip thr audiobook fot paperback.

This storyline had me living through the main character so well that I cussed her husband for his treatment of her. In addition to that personal connection, I was tearing up in certain parts. I loved the ending. Tammy Harrow created a very believable story. I completed the audiobook in 2 days. That's how good it was written! Excellent work!

I really enjoyed this audio book. The character development was superb and the suspense kept it hard to put down. I hope that the author writes more books. Also, the reader did a great job and was pleasant to listen to.

This is a very interesting storyline with marital abuse, adultery, and learning to love oneself enough to let go and learn to enjoy life.

Predictable and pedestrian, storyline very elastic, pedantic descriptions and moments of PC postulation.

It is heartbreaking and, sadly, still true for so many women.
The way she describes her relationship with Alex is, for a lot of points, how women are taught to idealize relationships, only to end up in toxic situations that endanger them.
I liked that Abby is moving on and working on herself to get herself into a better situation. Many of the struggles that women in similar situations face are shown, but no story is the same right?
    Overall, a good book.

This book was such hard work and I was close to giving up so many times. The story lines and time lines feel far fetched and improbable. I found the main character very unlikeable and annoying.

This book is not what I was expecting. This review contains spoilers.

I was expecting a whimsical Italian romance where the author drowns us in romantic cliches and flowery, magical landscapes. Instead, I got a an introduction into domestic violence, psychological abuse and PTSD. It was a good story all in all, I just found that the ending was odd. The twist that the book took with the protagonist being admitted to the psych ward, and then being able to overcome it all with the help of a self-less doctor seemed a bit extreme, or even out of place. I felt it may have ended better if she were in a coma or something and then upon waking is able to tell her story of what happened but I love a good happy ending and at least I got that.

I found some of the 'present' of the holiday unrealistic with a man she just met. I don't like the protagonist. She is demanding of a man she just met and having a romantic time with. He doesn't have to tell her anything. Such an American ideology that some one lies to you by not telling you their private lives.

Domestic abuse affects recipients differently. I am one such person Abby, so annoying at going along to get along. Where is her fear? Her limited present day self awareness is overdone, especially with the flashbacks of her awareness of his psycho abuse. Abby is unlikeable.

This is a very powerful book. It tells the story of a wife and mother who puts her dreams on hold for her family. A woman that has been bullied by her husband though never physically abused. It takes her a long time to realize she is indeed a battered woman. It’s a great story of survival, a mothers love, depression, childhood trauma. Great narrator

The main character , a medical school drop out, faints with stress, draws on one year of medical to know everything, has to count down backwards to ward off anxiety attacks, and tolerates a nickname ‘doc’- a gesture that would really be an insult if she had two brain cells. She’s annoying and helpless in every way imaginable. The plot of this book is thoughtful but never really fully developed. All characters are underdeveloped and unbearable. I rarely don’t finish books- but this book had such little draw it truly was a waste of time.

I couldn’t finish this one. So sappy. And the main character is supposedly an adult who was married for years. She behaves like a teenager.

So, so boring. And main character is representing herself as such a "oh so special snowflake with medical training". Don't waste your time, you will just be annoyed.

While some of the plot was slightly predictable, overall I listened to this story in under 24 hrs. It was fast-paced, had some really intense moments and was a solid storyline. I’d recommend, especially since it’s fairly quick and will definitely fill up and afternoon or evening.

I love the settings of this book, the explanation of the foods, etc., but that was about it. Maybe, MAYBE, I would understand Abby a bit more if she came from “the other side of the tracks, from an abusive home herself, but no….she is supposedly a highly intelligent woman who went to med school, yet too dumb to stand up for herself? I mean who cares about his privilege? Call the cops to help you if you are scared. Show them the threatening emails, get a restraining order. And to the author, do some due diligence on divorce in states. Florida is a no contest state. You can get a divorce even if “he refuses to give you one”. Granted she will lose all she would have won, but she will be free. As far as the B&E goes, cameras are $40 bucks. Just so unbelievable. However, I did enjoy the settings and knowledge of them that was written about.
