About this audiobook
“A true psychological thriller that will leave you breathless.” —Wendy Walker, bestselling author of All Is Not Forgotten and Emma in the Night
Emotionally guarded Daphne Amos always believed she’d found a kindred spirit in her fiancé, Heath. Both very private people, they’ve kept their pasts hidden from the world, and each other, until Heath’s escalating nightmares begin to put an undeniable strain on their relationship. Determined to give their impending marriage the best chance of succeeding, Heath insists that Daphne join him on a seven-day retreat with Dr. Matthew Cerny, a psychologist celebrated for getting to the root of repressed memories. Daphne reluctantly agrees—even though the past is the last place she wants to go.
The retreat’s isolated and forbidding location increases her unease, as do the doctor’s rules: they must relinquish their keys and phones, they’ll be monitored at all hours by hidden cameras, and they’re never to socialize with the other guests.
One sleepless night, Daphne decides to leave her room—and only then does she realize that the institute is not at all what it seems—and that whatever’s crying out from Heath’s past isn’t meant to be heard. It’s meant to be silenced.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. The story is engaging and keeps readers interested throughout, with a good pace and unpredictable twists. However, the narration is a major drawback for many readers. The narrator's constant swallowing and mouth noises are distracting and off-putting. Some readers find it gross and offensive. The book itself receives positive reviews, but the narration brings down the overall experience. Despite this, readers still appreciate the author's storytelling and the book's ability to captivate them.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5DO NOT LISTEN TO THIS WITH HEADPHONES.
This story is really well written. It’s engaging and, while a little predictable, it kept me interested.
HOWEVER…
This narrator takes “casual narration” to a new depths…in a terrible, terrible way. The mouth sounds are incessant, she makes disgusting chewing sounds (the sounds are not necessary if the author already described them), and the constant rattling intakes of breath for every single character are so annoying and distracting. Took me right out of the story every time.
It’s too bad that I really enjoyed this author because she exclusively worked with this narrator for her books and there’s no way I can listen to her again.1 person found this helpful
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Decent book. I didn't expect the end at all . My only complaint is it was very dragged out for that kinda ending

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I was left a bit disappointed by the end. I did like the premise, good, but it could have been great. The opportunities were there in spades. Heaths perspective could have saved this book.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great story - original and unpredictable. Good narration, if a little awkward at times.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Good story. She did a good job flowing the story through the present and past. Not a huge fan of the narrator(most voices were the same). There was also not really a pause between the last word in a chapter and the start of the next chapter. Overall though, good story that kept me listening and interested the whole time.

- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Couldnt get past the 2nd chapter. Lip smacking narrator seemed short of breath while reading.
Can’t rate the actual book, bc i couldnt listen to it. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Three chapters in, i didn't think I was going to continue listening. But, before I knew it, I was hooked. This is a very unusual novel , and I had to find out how it unfolded - so I kept on to the end! I would recommend persevering (you get used to the breathy narration style) . Soon, you will find that the story has been weaving itself around you, and you can't help but keep listening.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5It took me several chapters to get into this and normally I would stop listening if I don’t get an immediate love for a book. I’m glad I continue to listen. It definitely has some twist and turns that by the end of the book it was worth the time.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great story with a great twists. The narrator makes the story more interesting.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Fantastic narrator, good story, and I’m always a sucker for stories set in cities I’m familiar with. This was a good one, will be worth your time.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Good story & the ending was good as well, maybe the hopping timeline was a bit much, making the story drag unnecessarily. The comments about the narrator smacking her lips are exegarated, & I almost didn't try the story because of that! Her voice sounds a bit nasal & too chill sometimes or sort of bored, but the narration was still good.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I enjoyed this storyline with so many twists. It was a scary ride throughout the book.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Loved this, got through it in two days was hooked and then the twist at the end is worth the read/ listen!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Definitely kept my attention. It was a great listen for sure. The narrator is amazing. I’ve listened to other books narrated by her. She’s one of the best
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Narration was excellent. Most of the story was great but the twist is a tad far fetched even for a thriller.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book kept me interested the entire time. The plot twist was AWESOME!
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5I couldn't get into it; too wordy for my taste; just kind of dragged on and on over simple things.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Awesome story with very cool twists, that make you want to keep reading! A real page turner. The characters were very believable with intricate, well-plotted pasts, motives and thoughts. I loved the descriptions and settings. Very well written! And, I very much enjoyed the narration, that was wonderfully done and made it feel like I was listening to “a movie”! This was my first book by this author and I definitely want to read more (hopefully done by the same narrator)!!
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Great narrator. Really enjoyed her conversational delivery. Also, thrilling book. Had me going until the end.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Story was great. It kept me interested the entire time.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Liked this one and almost didnt want to listen to it because of all the bad reviews for the narrator, decided to give it a try either way and my conclusion is the narrator is doing very well. Didnt hear any nasty sounds (even with earbuds in).
