It is 2058, New York City. Technology now completely rules the world, but for New York Detective Eve Dallas, one irresistible impulse still rules the heart: passion…
Eve Dallas is a New York police lieutenant hunting for a ruthless killer. In over ten years on the force, she’s seen it all—and knows her survival depends on her instincts. And she’s going against every warning telling her not to get involved with Roarke, an Irish billionaire—and a suspect in Eve’s murder investigation. But passion and seduction have rules of their own, and it’s up to Eve to take a chance in the arms of a man she knows nothing about—except the addictive hunger of needing his touch.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The ground-breaking first in the series of J.D. Robb’s Lt. Eve Dallas futuristic police procedural murder series. Not for the faint-of-heart; the rapes and bloody murders in this novel are graphic and gruesome. But not only Eve catch the godawful criminals, she meets the intriguing Irish billionaire, initially a suspect, and they begin their memorable love affair that evolves into an essential element of the series.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Roarke was patronising at times but the story was alright overall
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Such a good story, I enjoyed the mystery of it and Roarke is seriously yummy. I just want more of those characters
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The story was well written the Characters where just brilliant
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Well written. Great story. I would recommend this book. ?
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5I would give this 3.5 stars. It is a typical murder mystery only the story is set about 50 years in the future. Some of the science fiction stuff was interesting, but none of it was necessary for the story. I liked some of the character building, but found that some of the decisions the characters made were too stereotypical. The mystery was entertaining enough to keep me turning pages, and I will read the next one in the series.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I have enjoyed reading J D Robbs book but it was an unexpected pleasure to hear this one read by a competent reader. I look forward to hearing more of the series if that is in the future.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I was intrigued. The futuristic setting and the circa 20th and 21st centuries were quite interesting since this book is 25 years old. I could not put the book down. Never saw the ending coming.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I absolutely LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series! All of the characters are relatable and likeable. You’ll fall in love with Roarke, your heart will break for Eve, and you’ll want to be besties with Peabody. I don’t think I’ve ever read a series where I’ve been this invested in the characters. I’ve been reading the In Death series since Naked in Death came out on paperback in 95’. A lot of you may not know the first three or four audiobooks were actually narrated by Christine McMurdo-Wallis and she did such a disservice to these characters. She was a horrible narrator. Thank God for Susan Ericksen! When I found out she re-narrated those books, I immediately started buying all of the In Death books on Audible so I could complete my library. This is a great series to immerse yourself into but, it’s even better if you listen to the audiobooks. The experience is completely different when you hear Susan Ericksen narrate. You'll fall in love with her performance and portrayal of each character.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book has an interesting mixture of crime, romance and passion to make it an all around fantastic read. The main feature is the crime and the mystery behind the ‘whodunit’ scenario. It leaves one guessing all the way until the end who might have been the murderer and then flings out a totally unexpected criminal. The romance for myself only adds to the experience of the read because it’s the background story to building the character profile. It allows the connection between reader and character to be made and increases the excitement. Not only does the main character have to tackle the problem of murder and deal with the fallout from the crime, but she has to balance it with a man who’s a suspect and coming after her for more than just a chat. The idea of Roarke being a suspect only further entangles the precarious emotions of Eve who is an incredibly likeable, strong heroine. She’s confused and distraught over potentially falling for her leading suspect, but then the problem appears when she’s faced with the facts and her gut instinct. Roarke is definitely the suave, man-of-your-dreams with the money, power and looks, you want him chasing you instead of Eve and it certainly becomes a page turner to find the murderer and the resulting implications for the romance. Roarke may be arrogant and over-bearing at times, but this only makes for an interesting mix with the strong-willed Eve. Robb certainly doesn’t surpass the gore and violence of a real crime thriller, despite having the romance, this book pertains all the grit of a really exciting crime book and loses nothing for gaining a love plot. The introduction to the series starts with a real adrenaline rush and without a doubt, leaves you desperate for more of Eve’s action, her romance and more murder! However if you’re looking for a straight crime without interference of romance, this book would not be one I’d recommend. Only if you like to mix the genres and enjoy some nice romance, with a suave, confident man then this book is for you. This book tops an all time favourite for me and I could read it over and over again!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Lieutenant Eve Dallas of the New York Police and Security Department (NYPSD) is assigned to find the murderer of Sharon DeBlass, granddaughter of powerful conservative Senator DeBlass, and a licensed companion or prostitute. The murderer has left a note promising 5 more bodies. While investigating she meets billionaire Roarke and .....Book #1 of my favorite series each time a new book comes out I like to start rereading all from the first before I read the new. They never get old.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Just as good as my first read if not better on audiobook. If you like romantic suspense/police procedurals/who-done-its do not hesitate to pick this up.
The premise might sound like something you’ve heard a thousand times, sex/lies/politics/murder/scandal, but this was the granddaddy.
Published in the mid 90s but set well into the future it’s ageless.
Just read it. You know you want to ?. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Ok I finally decided to give this a try before 2019 ended. I mean my girl Teeny hasn't hushed up about it all year. I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't completely sold either. I think knowing a few future issues might upset me maybe counted towards my lack of joy. I liked Rourke a lot. I just don't like how much liberalism was shoved down my throat. I mean everything from meat to coffee was gone unless boot legged. Prostitution is legal and so many other things. Like science is making babies more than nature? No more guns. Just strange. I am interested enough to keep going. Loved that it's free on audio through Scribd. I don't think I'd read it.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5The year is 2058 and Eve Dallas is a lieutenant in the NYPD investigating a murder of the professional companion. The killer has left a note indicating that this is only the first of six and to make matters worse politics is thrown into the mix as the victim's grandfather and mother are senators.I've wanted to try this book for some time now but have to admit that knowing this is by Nora Roberts has kept me from giving it a go. I'm not a fan of romance and thought this might be pretty lame as far as the mystery aspect went and too heavy on the romance part. I was in for a big surprise. I absolutely loved this book! The murder was intense, gritty and quite graphic. I did figure it out by the end but not too soon. When the romance part started I was rolling my eyes for the first little bit but I was won over pretty quick as Eve Dallas and Rourke are really compelling characters with many layers. And honestly, how could anyone resist Rourke! I look forward to getting to know both of them more. This was a page turner for me and I can't wait for more. I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to read these books. Bring on the next book!
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The first in the In Death series by J.D. Robb was first published in 1995 and the plot reads like it was taken out of our current headlines. Set in 2058, the story is about Lieutenant Eve Dallas, New York cop, who is gritty and hard and is fighting for justice for all it?s worth. What is it worth? An upscale prostitute Sharon DeBlass has been murdered the 20th century way. With a hand gun (they use lasers now) and with venomous intent. Sharon isn?t just any prostitute; she is the granddaughter of Senator DeBlass who thinks he is as moral as they come. But is he?Roarke, wealthy entrepreneur extraordinaire, is smart and savvy and is a suspect in the case. He has an eye for Eve who tries to go by the book, but can he get past her defenses and her past?I have been meaning to read this series for years and got an opportunity to listen to the book on CD, read by Susan Ericksen. Ms. Ericksen does a convincing job with each of the characters. To me, the plot felt mainstream and I didn?t find anything new there, but then the book was written over a decade ago and may have been a new market to some. The romance between Roarke and Eve was okay to bring depth to Eve?s character, but it wasn?t one of the better romances that I have read. Let?s hope they get better in the latter books in the series. The story does contain violence and talks about rape, incest and child abuse, so be prepared for that.Overall I found the story to be fairly interesting, but not outstanding. In fact, I guessed the murderer pretty early in the story. If you like gritty police procedurals with suspense and romance mixed in, this one?s for you.
